Anything short of a straight up 2a repeal is a waste of time to actually impact the number of legal firearms in circulation. However I feel pretty confident no Dim actually wants to commit political suicide.
The gun advocates are fairly quiet in this since most expect these people to cry themselves out and move on. If an actual 2a repeal gets tabled all the gloves will come off.
A repeal of the 2nd Amendment wouldn't necessarily mean that we'd come and grab your guns. All it means is that your right to own guns would be on equal footing with your right to have other things with no specific constitutional protection (cars, boats, etc).

That would be the legal effect of repealing the 2nd Amendment. The federal government would probably set some baseline for regulation, and then states could be more restrictive if they so chose.
You will see a large drop in the number of homicides, or maybe an increase when you go to confiscate them.
I've been considering this notion that something/anything must be done to mitigate death from gun violence. Seems like the biggest bang for the buck (pardon the pun) is to confiscate guns from inner city gang members.
