Duke’s Mayo Bowl will be Mississippi State (5-7) after opt outs, based on APR score rankings.

I hope Notre Dame tells the bowls thanks but no thanks.

Actually, I hope they tell them to F off.

Because Notre Dame is big about turning down money….

They’re having to figure out which ACC bowl game they tag in in place of another team.

Edit: Forget what I said, Notre Dame opts for no bowl game.

Notre Dame announced they are declining to play in a bowl game after being the last team out of the College Football Playoff. The school announced the decision today.

Never mind. Notre Dame turns down the bowl bid.

Here is the deal - I may have felt bad for ND but not anymore. Next year, if they end up ranked in the top 12, they are "in" regardless. If that had been in effect this year they would have knocked out Miami even though they beat them. No team deserves to be that special. Sorry they just don't. Let them join a conference or keep them out.

Something tells me teams opting out of bowls will become an offseason hot topic. Especially now that Notre Dame opted out.

The CFP should take the top 12 teams regardless of conference affiliation.

Gotta change the current agreement then. I think it ends up at 16 teams, straight rankings, no conference guarantees. And while winning a P4 CG almost certainly gets you in, losing it does not come with same guarantee. Side note: With these 16-20 team conferences, the tiebreaker formats for the CG need to be looked at by the respective conference leaders.

Every. Game. Counts. Isn't that what they want?

They are going to have to make concessions with the G5 teams to ensure they get at least one spot or separate into two divisions and have two champions.

Tulane beat Duke. Memphis beat Arkansas. South Florida beat Florida.

I know not great teams but G5 schools do sometimes win.

So do teams opting out of bowl games not get the extra practices?

They could create a play-in playoff game for the G5, soon to be G6 conference as the Pac 12 will join them next year. Not exactly sure how to do it but maybe have the top 2 G6 conferences champions play for the 12th/16th spot. Maybe have a G6 committee to determine the 2 most deserving. I would think in most years there probably wouldn't be more than 2 teams that would stand out.

It's not perfect and it's an added game for them but this year James Madison and Tulane could play for the spot and leave another spot open for a more deserving at large.

So what qualifies a conference as P4 verses G5? If a G5 team were to win the Championship, does that conference then become a P conference?

What happens with the Pac 12 remerges and Oregon and others decide they have had enough and rejoin? Does it then become a P conference again?

To me the designation has always been "iffy" and based on perceived strength of the conference. And if that is the case isn't the ACC at risk of losing their P status?
