His talent level just went up from a c- to a b-. Problem is his competition just went from c- to an a+. Cdd is a good coach and he will have us competitive in 2011, but this year, it's like he just walked into a dark alley and is finding he is armed with a knife while several of his attackers have guns..... Really big guns..... Big scary guns..... :)

I feel like we're probably a B or B+ in terms of the talent jump (maybe more), but we're really inexperienced and super thin in some key positions on the depth chart. You're certainly right about the knife vs gun fight. Frankly, if he equals last seasons record I'll be pleased as long as the next recruiting class helps address some of our depth needs. I'll tell you this much, I never would have dreamed we'd be going into 2010/2011 with 4 QBs on the roster. Wonder who the transfers will be?

And he also went from a d- program to a b+ or a- program. It's not that we don't have talent, we just simply don't have depth. And that just comes with time. I agree with your competition comparison though. BUT, there are no excuses, TIF.

might be right about the talent as a whole, but problem is it isn't distributed evenly, so we can't get our most talented guys all on the field. We have almost nothing ready to play at dtackle and oline. Before anyone says it, yes, four or five players where you need five olinemen and five dtackles is my definition of nothing. True frosh Olineman are just not a factor unless we are an absolute disaster. We have a bunch of four/five star guys at rb and rec that we can't get on the field at once. Our regular lineup of 22 guys will consist of 7 line positions where we have two guys that have proven they have ability and I feel confident will develop into consistent, good performers(Douglas, Hughes). We have a couple olineman that have some experience that we hope take a big step and walls who I really hope can play. That's five guys that aren't givens, but we have some hope, the rest? This means, before injury, we are sending two or three way subpar guys out there... As starters, not even talking about the other three dtakles needed for a rotation.

Overall talent as a whole roster, maybe b, b+, talent going into battle next year, looks like c+, b-, ar best. Can the other linemen improve? Sure, ridiculous to say they can't. Based on talent assessment when they arrived and progress shown so far, not likely.

We are a good program with great facilities, good coaches, money, exposure and great fans. The program doesn't walk on the field and tackle anyone. The product is coaching and recruiting and over the past four years we have been mediocre at best in recruiting as a whole and a freakin disaster at recruiting the lines. This isn't excuses, I expect the coaches to put together a good plan, out coach the other team and our players to play hard, tough and smart, but at the end of the day there is a certain point when a disparity in quality of players is insurmountable, especially with a consistently murderous schedule. This year we are past that point.

Well, at least other coaches have high opinions of him. Compare that with what all the other coaches were saying about Kiffin and i say we stepped a level up in at least that department. Now, lets go from there....

Agree 100%. I also think Wilcox will be an improvement over Monte, because I think Monte was having a hard time adjusting to the multiple offenses in the college games (especially offenses like the spread that attack the edges of the defense). Wilcox is a college coach and has seen it all. Monte is a pro coach who only had to prepare against one type of offense every week in the NFL.

However, this upcoming season was going to be tough no matter who is the coach. This will be the season that Fulmer's recruiting disasters will catch up to us the most.

My hope is that we see a team that shows up and plays hard every week and shows improvement as the season progresses. Unlike last season, where we were blown out 2 out of the last 4 games, and struggled to beat Vandy and Kentucky the other 2 games. I think Kiffin got a lot out of the team in the middle of the season, but I think the players quit on him a bit at the end. Probably started to catch onto him being a fraud and lost some respect for him as the coach. Don't know, just speculation. We certainly had some mounting injuries as well.

6 wins this season will be good, and anything above that will be great.

you really think NFL offenses are that much easier to prepare for than college ones? There's a reason they don't all run the spread in the pros

There are a lot of things that go into a season...This is Feb we have 6 full months for these guys to get better, work hard and pay attention to what they need to do...

We have some pretty good coaches and yes we may have some depth issues but maybe some people step up this year and fill those gaps...We never know until the season starts....

If our guys are well coached and fundamentaly sound on almost every play then we will compete every game...Really that is all you can ask for from this team.

I think we will win some games we are not suppossed to win this year. We have some weapons on the field coming back and the same Offensive Coordinator...There will be consistency in the offense. The real question is going to be can the Defense make plays??

I know our Offensive line is a question....But this is a Zone blocking team and Zone blocking is not Rocket Science....They just have to be strong and tough....I think we will be surprised this year with the O-Line similar to that of last year...

Chuck Smith will do his job and will make it happen with the D-Line...Him and Thompson together should have those boys ready to get after it....I am a little worried about the Defensive Secondary...But again lets see who comes out of Spring Fired up and ready to play....

Happy to see the positive fan response on this thread. More accustomed to seeing that the sky is falling. We will move in a positive direction. I believe that.

And that's why most people still see us as mediocre next year, and rightfully so. I'm not a homer, but i still firmly believe that we have enough of what it takes to win 6 or 7 games next year. It just annoys me to see so many predicting 4-8 and 5-7 seasons based on nothing more than Dooley's measely three years at La Tech. I mean, i know it's not spectacular, far from it. But coaching isn't something that just happens overnight, three years isn't really long enough to judge a first-time head coach. Some of Tennessee's coaches got off to very slow starts, and some of those same ones went on to eventually win SEC titles. Just saying, at least try to be optimistic. i know we won't be spectacular next year, but i'm not gonna get all doom and gloom about it.

And to the poster i'm responding to, most of this post isn't directed at you. It's just directed at all the "sky is falling" ones.

This is NOT a CDD recruiting class and we won't see the 1st CDD class until a year from now.

What he was able to accomplish in just 17 days with the turmoil and chaos he walked into was amazing.

The article from Coach Peterson is very clear that he thinks CDD is a GREAT pick and that we got him 1 year before another major football power got him and add our OC and new DC and the other coaches we now have in place and we're going to have a great coaching team and I hope we can keep them all for several years.

Next season with our brutal schedule and lack of depth will be tough but if we win 7 games and get into any kind of bowl game I'll say our coaches and players did a great job.

2 seasons from now is really when we start taking the steps back up the mountain to SEC championships and I believe CDD will get us there.

So does Coach Peterson.

didn't take the post personally in anyway. The whole state of the program is frustrating. I agree that on average we are probably looking at 6-6. Could go a game either way based on how all our multitude of question marks work out and what injuries occur.

I think cdd is a good coach, he will recruit well and his staff will put together a good game plan each week..., and will still end up 6-6. That's just where we are, but it will go up dramatically after this year.

Wilcox needs more rock stars on that side of the ball and I think he will turn heads. I really think if we win 7 next year instead of 5 it will be on high powered offense.

While we are at it, what's lulz mean?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

Lulz is a typographical subversion of the word "lol", meaning to Laugh Out Loud, thus emphasising the humour derived from the subject by way of making the original word sillier.
Megalulz ensue.
Citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: "Why Truman? Why the bomb? It killed thousands of innocent women and children"

President Harry Truman: "I did it for the lulz"

Ive been saying this the day Dooley was hired and I will continue to say "Dooley is a great adminstrative head coach who if given an opportunity too build the UT Football program his way UT's future is very promising".

Dooley needs to surround him with energetic, hard-working young men driven to succeed. Hiring Wilcox from Boise State is an excellent choice.

Dooley will excel at UT in recruiting with the university and there facilities as the selling point. All asst coaches better be prepared to coach alot of young footbal talent b/c Dooley is gunna be a recruiting "god" in the years to come.

Great article. Thanks for the link.

Great, great hire of Wilcox. I wasn't afraid of you guys too much until I saw that signing. I was hoping the Ducks would snatch him up before someone else did. See you in September.
