Q&A with ESPN's Tom Luginbill on Tennessee recruiting, its growing class and Butch Jones | Evan's Eleven

Blue-shirting: This scheme was originated by New Mexico State but has not been practiced widely around the nation. Here’s how it works: Officially, a player arrives in the summer as a walk-on. Once football practice begins, he’s awarded a scholarship. The school is allowed to count the scholarship forward — against the 2015 class — but the player can play immediately.
There’s a big catch: The student-athlete may not have been recruited, as defined by NCAA bylaws. That means no official visit to campus, no in-home visits from coaches, no signed National Letter of Intent or athletic aid.
Only a handful of players, if any, would meet that criteria.
Does anyone know if we have 1 or 2 commitments that may meet this criteria? It's a very obscure loophole and there has been no indication that Tenn will use it, but it definitely is an interesting idea to consider. No tellin' what a loophole like that, if it is even possible, could do for the stretching and bending of numbers in this class.

We know Jones said that we sign 30 others feel confident it's a hard 30 with the chance to offer 2 greyshirts. The "blueshirt" notion is crazy, but unless we somehow pull numbers out of our butt I think we are looking at 30/32 as our maximum class size with the exception of "blueshirting".

Thoughts?

It is generally thought that this will be tough. The phone call criteria is especially difficult.

This is clearly the path we are taking... IMO. No way we don't end up over 32.....

The part that really scares me with this is the staff by rule "couldn't arrange" a phone either. Now that's hard to prove but a direct message on twitter or calling a HS coach to get a recruit to call constitutes arranging a phone call IMO.

We better have swept the room clear of evidence because IMO other schools will come after us if we try this.

Just to clear out future questions, Berry Bros cannot be blue shirted as they had Coach Gillespie visit them (according to rivals). That rules them out.

And about Eric paying for their school, VN says thats still an option :eek:lol:

When did he visit??

It's my understanding off campus visits can't happen until December.

Edit: I looked up the recruiting calender. We have not met with any recruits for this class off campus yet. December 1st is the first day that's allowed

Evan Berry

5/21/2013: Robert Gillespie from Tennessee Volunteers visits Evan Berry

Not sure if that is counted as in-house visit!

My opinion is that none of us should even try to figure out the blue-shirt stuff. It's far, far, far too complicated and we work with far, far, far too little information.

Just enjoy the ride. Don't get too down if a player you like gets dropped. Don't get too hyped when a player visits. So many things change in recruiting from hour to hour.

Good post and I agree in a practical sense but we have 31 commits and 30spots. We have to have something to discuss until NSD since most agree discussing who might get culled is inappropriate. At least for me learning new rules is always an enjoyable process

Wasn't there talk on here earlier in the year that the Berry boys had not officially visited U.T.????? If this is true, then wouldn't they qualify?

I looked at the roster today and when adding the seniors & juniors on this team, we have 52. That means we can give out a total of 52 scholarships in two recruiting cycles. So, if we sign 30 this recruiting cycle and then gray or blue shirt 2 or 3 more, then in 2015 National Signing Day, we can only sign 20 recruits.

That will be a smaller class in 2015, but will need to fill that class with top players and not taking chances on developmental players who are 2* and we hope that they develop.

However; there is the possibilty that some players will voluntarily leave the team between the two seasons. For example: Channing Fugate, Alan Posey, etc. etc. who left between last season and this season. This would open up more scholarships for us.

Take a look at the number of stars. That is the system set up to tell you how good a player is. The one and two stars are not recruited. The 3,4,5 are recruited. This is how it is done.

I kid I kid
Hell if I know the answer to that question!

I believe we are goiing to circumvent this in a few ways.

Greyshirting- at least 2 student athletes.

Also, I believe 1 to 2 EE may not go on scholorship their first semester through the summer and then sign athletic aide. I believe this may be a bit different then Blue Shirting as they are here a longer period of time, but I think I read Mixon may do this, but I dont know the circumstances behind it. Again, I have no clue what we can or cant do on that, but I wonder if its possible.

Blueshirting- If any qualify, I think we could use this.

With his new multimillion dollar yearly salary, Butch Jones himself will pay for the tuition of the extra recruits. Mystery solved :cool2:
