BJ Coleman (Merged)

Here's what is bothering me, it seems Kiffin is determined to make Crompton "work", b/c he best fits his own system. Coleman may have been the better game player, but he wasn't what Kiffin wanted, b/c he didn't fit his system, nor did he have the type of skills Kiffin wants for the system he wants to run. It seems Coleman was a square peg for Kiffin's round hole. Urban Meyer didn't ditch Chris Leak, even though Leak was the same way (not making a direct talent comparison btwn Leak and Coleman), Meyer reformulated his own system to fit the players he was dealt. Obviously when Tebow came, he began to run his system, but Meyer didn't force it on Leak, but he played Leak and ran an offense that was productive for Leak.

I'm bothered that Kiffin would be so obsessed with his own system, and showing it to recruits, that any talent that doesn't fit into his system, he gladly just says 'later'. I know lots of you think everything Kiffin does is "gospel", but is anyone else a bit unnerved here?

It's a little different reading his quote's in articles than listening to him directly (i guess you could say). BJ is pissed.

I got the same impression. Not defending him at all, but this is a kid who has had his mouth shut for 3 years. He has never been a distraction or any kind of complainer. Is it a bit strange to hear that from him? Just makes me wonder why he is so angry? Those just aren't the words of a kid who didn't get his dreams fulfilled, they are harsher.

Probably because he has a lot of confidence, and an over inflated sense of self. Maybe he isn't getting a fair shake at Tennessee, but two coaching staffs have placed him behind Jonathon and Nick. If he were the next coming of Peyton Manning I can assure you he would be our starting QB, but I don't understand why people are trying to blame Lane Kiffin for looking at his options and saying "You know what? I don't know that this kid gives me the best chance to win." Because Phil Fulmer did the same thing.

Do you remember his presser when he got hired? Kiffin is not lying, he said he would play the best player that fit his system. If the coaches think Crompton is the best QB for their system and playbook, then so be it. Me, you, or anyone else on this board knows what goes on in practice and what is said behind closed doors. Truth of it is Coleman is not a top QB in the country, and never will be. He will never take a snap in the NFL, etc. In his eyes he realizes that Crompton is a senior and Kiffin is getting a top rated QB this year. That leaves no room for him. Kiffin never said "later" to Coleman by any means. Coleman could still be a QB at UT right now. Even if Crompton is/was chosen the starter, coleman is one fumbled snap/INT/stupid play/injury away from being the starter.

Can't argue much against that. But I don't know how it took Fulmer 4 games to figure out that Crompton was a liability. I thought it was too generous to let him start against UAB.

Penn,

Looking at some of the best programs in the nation, they all run on a specific system. It helps that they get talented players, but why do you think that is? Its because their"system" has success. If CLK wants to stick to a specific system and work around it that way, I say so be it. Talent will come when the standard is set. Its not a sprint, its a marathon. And eventually, as the thugs say, "game will recognize game".

People continue to blame Kiffin and no one even knows for sure that he ever said that BJ didnt fit his system. Maybe, just maybe, he actually thinks Crompton is better. And maybe, just maybe BJ should have been willing to accept that and WAIT HIS TURN like so many other football players have to. For all he knows it might have been his turn IN THE FIRST GAME.

If you listen to the interview is seems that the ONLY WAY BJ thought he would be getting a fair shake is if he was named the starter...and I do not think it is OK for any player to act as if they DESERVE to be given anything...

I don't mean to be annoying and argumentative, but I'm just thinking through this. It seemed BJ just wanted a shot to work with the first team, and he wasn't even getting that. Did it make sense to anyone else in the O/W game that Coleman was not being rewarded with more series based on his play? or even an opportunity with the first team?

The fact that Coleman nor Stephens got a shot with the first team O against the first team D makes me think Kiffin is full of it for not just naming Crompton the starter.

I know what you are saying and I'm right there with you.

Well, but at the same time if he named Crompton the starter how would things be different? BJ would probably still need to transfer.

I don't fault the kid for leaving, what I fault is all these people who seem to think he was the second coming of Peyton Manning when two coaching staffs have kept him on the bench.

The way I see it is he requested more playing time, basically got brushed off, and decided to throw a gigantic hissy fit instead of letting his play some where else speak for itself. I sort of give him a pass because he's a young kid in a competitive atmosphere, but he isn't winning any friends.

It doesnt really matter to me if Kiffin thinks Crompton is his guy...if he does, he has his reasons. What matters to me is that when BJ didnt get what BJ wanted, he quit, and then took shots at people. I dont want anyone with that attitude on the team. That is the attitude that many on here have been conplaining has been so prevalent the last few years...me-first, because I deserve it.

Coleman better start if Kiffin is as smart as he acts, because judging from last year and just having common sense, Stephens And Crompton, why in the hell were they even recruited as qb's, that was about damn stupid.

I think I remember reading in one of the CTFP articles that Kiffin was upset (or something similar) when he found out BJ was leaving. But a UT spokesperson recently said that the coaching staff was not told/aware that BJ is leaving. Just thought I'd point that out, as it seems odd. Or perhaps my memory is off.

I understand everyone's thoughts on Coleman getting no reps with the first team O against the first team D in the O&W game. It seems to me that this could be a situation where:

1) Kiffin wanted to see how Coleman would respond - does he go to work and win the spot in the fall, or fold his tent? I.e. Competition... keep it going through the summer and into fall, and make them ALL work for it.

2) They really wanted to give Crompton a "final" shot in the O&W game because...

a) Kiffin recruited him and wanted to see if JC had what Kiffin saw in him back when he was coming out of highschool, and/or
b) he has the most experience of the three

None of these guys are infallible - not Kiffin, Coleman, etc... but I've got to think that Kiffin is going to field the quarterback he's evaluated to be the best option for wins in the fall.

They can obviously recruit, and I doubt they'd be terribly concerned that a recruit is going to run to another school because we have a sophomore QB. They convinced Bryce to come here with an obviously weakened O line, for crying out loud. I can't imagine that they're going to jeopardize an entire season with QB they don't believe is the best choice, so that they can bank on a true freshman for '10.

Just my .02, aaaaaaand :gone:
