BJ Coleman (Merged)

It's being said on Rivals by someone who has spoken with players that the general feeling is that BJ was never given a fair shot to win the job for the sake of recruiting.

I don't think we currently have a "playmaker" at the position.

Unless you consider someone who gets the ball from the center to the half back, a playmaker, I'd say that's a safe statement. I didn't think we had one in that position yesterday, either, though.

And this is where I take a bow :)

That is exactly how Kiffin thinks and operates.

And assuming any of those guys are going to be ready to play their freshman year is assuming too much. Sometimes you can ruin a kid's confidence by starting him too early.

Or you can have it ruined in his sophmore season (Ainge) or wait to start them after their redshirt junior season (Crompton).

This whole thing is a crap shoot. You can succeed or fail by starting them early or waiting until their junior year... just depends on the individual.

I know you're upset about this Sab, and I think it does hurt us from a depth standpoint. I just disagree with you on the situation. Every year, a few quarterbacks are going to be told that they aren't the one. Now whether Kiffin told him he would never start is pure speculation.

It looks like he wanted to start somewhere, and start this year (hence the comment about losing another year of eligibility). Regardless of whether he's a good kid or not, if he was told he wasn't going to start he had 2 options... 1) ride the pine and wait for his chance, or 2) transfer somewhere where he is guaranteed. He chose the latter.

He did what was best for him, and I wish him the best. Lets move on
That's what makes this board interesting that we sometimes disagree. I just want to know why Michael Rozier is a better 3rd option than BJ Coleman. When someone can explain that to me outside of the impact on recruiting, I will be happy.

wow, I though coleman had a decent chance to start over crompton this season, he also didn't seem to make the critical mistakes that crompton did, (from what I saw of coleman), he looked like he managed the game better than crompton in the games against vandy and UK, which is what UT needs right now . .a qb who can manage the game.

I kind of thought this too in the back of my mind. I felt that Coleman could lead us better than any of the other QB. I am depressed.

who said he was?

Rozier is a can't lose situation.

I'm not saying hang our hats on a true freshman, but we'll need atleast 2-3 QB's this next class inorder to find which one will step up and excel at the position with the right grooming.

I'd love for any one of the guys to be "the man". I really don't care who it is. (My son isn't old enough yet :))

I'd rather our coach be honest (whatever his opinion is) than be a phony. BJ's not the guy? OK. Whatever. He told him the truth and gave him a chance to play elsewhere. Is that a bad thing?

If BJ's right, then we're shooting ourselves in the foot for the sake of recruiting. Having not signed a QB in each of the last 2 classes (other than Casey Kelly), we already have a great situation for an incoming QB recruit. The staff should be looking for who will help the team most this year and not who may help us sign a guy down the road. A bird in the hand.

Crompton was the only QB in the UK game...

Who said that?

this tells me all i need to know about BJ. I'm sorry, but a guy who has the potential to lead a team in the SEC wouldn't up and quit before fall camp even started. Maybe Kiffin wanted to see how well he deals with adversity...probably not...but now we see he can't handle it. If anybody had a case for transfering, it's Stephens.

Well, the controversy that might have resulted from not playing BJ this fall is gone. That's likely good for the team. The whole Chattanooga bandwagon should be partially blamed for BJ over-inflating his self worth to the team.

And, there still is the possibility that JC is the better QB. Stephens seemed to have the same problem with some of his teammates last season that the coaching staff had with them this spring.

There could be something from him this fall. :dunno:

Well I have a problem with that, I'm sorry. I just don't agree with it. You don't put recruiting above your own team. BJ had the support of the team more than any other QB. I wasn't rooting for him to win the job this year, but I think he could have been a better QB than Crompton was and likely started next year for us. I don't give a crap what his skillset is, he's better than starting a true freshman.

Some of you don't realize how bad this year is for drop-back Pro-style QB's. If we miss on Heaps or Scroggins, the level of talent takes a nose dive. And neither of those guys are certainties at this point. We haven't even been talking to Scroggins, we've been e-mailing him, which is strange since another prospect mentioned that the coaches don't respond to email.

Makes sense to me, because he's a Jr this season, and if he was the starter all yr and as productive, you can't sell the immediate playing time for a 4*-5* recruit. But, with BJ gone, it thins us out and makes the whole playing time more appealing.

Guys if he was third under three offensive coordinators he was never going be first choice. Its not like the coaches are out to screw him. He was obviously not good enough. Best move for him probably.
