Fulmer was so close that year could have really changed his legacy towards the end
I agree. Who knows how it plays out, but he would’ve gone to SEC title games in 04,06,07. That’s pretty strong. Obviously 05 and 08 were awful, but that would’ve been a great ending for him.

What's absurd about this list is that 1st Team All-SEC DaRick Rogers was kicked off the team right before the season. It was already and insane position, but had he dialed back the devils lettuce, then no WR room in UT history would have even come close!
Kinda funny to think you can buy it at the gas station now.

Iceman hands down and without question

Dude walked onto the field a few games into his freshman year and took control.

The fact that he tortured the Gators in Gville is also a big plus for him.

I miss iceman so much. #7 was special. I wish I could get his autograph.

Funny story about Clausen

Not long after I moved to Dallas I was in line at Dollar Tree for some reason one day and just happened to turn around and he was standing right behind me. (This was like 2007-ish right before smartphones with cameras were everywhere)

Of course I kind of fanboyed out and asked him what he was doing these days (coaching some school in Texas at the time), etc

As I was driving off, I realized that my conversation with him and the questions I asked him did not even remotely indicate that I actually knew who he was.

Poor guy probably thought I was some weirdo lol. Didn't even have on any UT gear at the time ha ha.

Casey Clausen by a mile. The best QB on that list is debatable, but best as a Freshman is Clausen and it's not close.

Ainge probably next best Freshman, but then had a Sophomore slump, before rebounding Junior and Senior years (with Cutcliffe).

All I wanna know is who voted for Bailey and did they trip and fall down a mountain while trying to pick somebody else and accidentally pic him... That's the only explanation

Won at UGA early as underdogs, that may put him over Clausen, but I prefer Clausen. Won the East in 2004 and gave an unbeaten Auburn team a fight in the SEC title game.
Rick Clausen was a redshirt junior that year. He isn’t a part of this conversation because he was at LSU as a freshman. I was referring to Casey Clausen.

But Rick Clausen only beat Vanderbilt and Kentucky to win the East. Those two teams combined for 4 wins. The next year he only started in two wins, against Memphis and a 3 win Ole Miss team. Ainge was most definitely the better player, even given the disaster of his sophomore season.

Clausen , he was the QB who brought the Vols back against LSU and won in OT after we were down by 21 points at halftime.<<at Death Valley Epic game

Who mentioned Rick? I was saying that I lean towards Ainge then mentioned I preferred Casey Clausen. Never mentioned Rick. I know Rick was at LSU in 01 because Jimmy wore that stupid half LSU/half UT shirt. How did Rick come into the conversation? You think I was saying I prefer Rick Clausen to Ainge? lol.

Yeah, my bad. I wrote that in a very confusing way. I was talking about how Ainge won at Georgia in 2004 and how that team went on to win the east and compete with Auburn. I was trying to say that the 04UGA game Ainge won as a freshman was a huge moment as far and that season and his career and that’s why I rank him where I do, I ver Clausen. I prefer Casey Clausen though. In no way do I put Rick in the same category with Casey and Erik. Sorry for the confusion.

I gotcha. I do believe Ainge is a no brainer for best freshman since Peyton, but I can definitely understand and probably agree with anyone who says Casey had the better overall career.

Yeah, for me, beating Florida and Georgia as a freshman is pretty tough to top. I mentioned the SEC championship game that year because it doesn’t happen without that win on the road against Georgia, and him doing that as a freshman against that Georgia team was pretty dang impressive.

I liked what Rick was able to do for us. He was a serviceable QB when we needed him. His only knock was that he had to release the ball a full five seconds before the receiver began to make his cut on a turnout. However, even doing that, his passes were on the money. In the end, I do think ole Saban was correct.

It's not really close, it's Clausen. Somebody have Heupel bring Casey back as his OC.

Dobbs if considering their full career. But only considering the freshman it would probably have to be Erik Ainge.

That wasn't his freshman year.

I get the arguments for Clausen and Ainge, but keep in mind the dark time at UT. There was open in-fighting amongst the administration, poor hiring decisions and poorer moves to attempt remedy. Hamilton, Hart, Dooley, Jones… During this anathema, Dobbs was forced into starting after Peterman injured his throwing hand. Yes, the Vols record was dismal during Dobbs’ early starts, but that wasn’t entirely on him. Despite the INTs and losses, Dobbs showed something that would come to fruition in the following seasons. Without him, the Vols would not have gone 8-4 and won their bowl games. Jones and his coaching staffs wouldn’t have faired so well without Dobbs (4-8, 0-8 the year after he left). Yeah, on his freshman starts alone, he’s not in good company, but he did show what was to come during that struggle.
