i'm usually not one to start these kinds of threads....."favorite players" "which team do you hate more" type stuff...but this game, just brings something out in me that only comes once a year. it's one that's worth a walk down memory lane as far as i'm concerned, so as we head in to the 2007 chapter of this game......what are your best memories of a game you attended or viewed?
For me, my first positive memory is obviously Dale Jones. I don't remember a whole lot about the rest of the game that day, but I'll remember Dale Jones forever because of that play against the Tide.
now it takes several more years for me to come up with another positive.....and that was 1993. that was the first Bama/TN game i saw in person. me and one of my best friends, a bama fan, drove down to B'ham from Memphis to take it in....$100 per ticket off the street and we were privy to one of the better games in the series. Vividly remember the crowd and the nervousness of them thruout, and Heath Shuler and Craig Faulkner's big TD throw and catch.
unfortunately, i also remember Jay Barker and David Palmer and the crowd's elation when the game ended in a tie.
at least i didn't have to ride all the way back to Memphis after a loss with my buddy who'd had the upper hand as long as i could remember.
1995, for obvious reasons. I was a student at TN by then and that night was the first "big" win i'd been around Knoxville for. truly a great day and night to be in Knoxville TN. 41-14. Gene Stallings walking off the feild in defeat and the visitors locker room smelling of cigars and ringing chants of "i don't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama, cause we're from Tennessee!!!!". Glorious.
1996. Got to see us beat the Tide in person, in a fashion i had become used to seeing us lose to the tide in. a late interception to seal the deal and break the crimson hearts of the Bama faithful. it was at that point i had a true understanding of the utter arrogance of the Bama fans, as they got back on their busses, looking at us and saying "yeah, well we're STILL Alabama". as if i some how cared at that point?
2003. the 5 OT thriller. now neither team was all that great. and the game was physical and a battle. i had the pleasure of watching the game with a friend of mine in Charlotte who is a Bama alum. and as the game wore on, i really regretted going over there, cause the thought of losing this game in this guy's house, really started to mess with my head. fortunately, it was i that was all smiles as the entire stadium, and household i was in, was left in heartbreak as TN pulled out a W in a game that neither team would forget anytime soon. I took great pleasure in that win, if for no other reason than you could tell that "the heart of dixie" had been broken.
2006. it wasn't pretty. it wasn't flashy. but it was a W after what i would call the biggest heart breaker for me the previous year, since the 90 game we lost 9-6. 6-3 the previous year just killed me and it was good to get back to winning ways against the tide, in any way shape or form.
so here we are on the eve of yet another tilt against the crimson tide. new coach. lots of fanfare for the 4 million dollar man. lots of anxiety for the 2 million dollar man. no law suits. no probation. just two teams in the SEC that control their own destiny for the conf. title, the way it should be.
here's to making another good memory on the third Saturday of October. Go Vols.
