Bennie Wylie new strength coach

There are few facts missing from bennie wylie's resume. He was not the head strength & conditioning coach at TTU. He worked with football only. And he was released as an intern from the Cowboys by Joe Juraszek.
He was an average strength coach here at TTU at best but you'd never know it from his gigantic ego.
And he was NOT respected by everyone at TTU.

Great first post

He was the TT football S&C coach for 5 years and was with the Dallas Cowboys for 4 years. If he was so bad, why did they keep him around for so long? I am sure that he was not respected by EVERYONE (who is?), but from the comments on the TT board they did not sound to happy to lose him. It sounds like you have eaten some sour grapes to me.:p

Most of the comments on the TT board don't have a clue. Perception is everything right? He looks strong therefore he must be awesome, right? They were happy with 8-4 seasons and no championships. I am looking forward to something better and getting a new strength coach is the start. I just thought you might like to know the truth instead of what bennie wylie is portraying as the truth. Am I bitter? Sure maybe a little but just watch UT's combine and NFL day performances suffer as well as the relationships between him and the other S&C staff's on campus. I'm telling you, he's a cancer.

a lot of rumblings from the Tech fans around here about Wylie leaving. Some say he was the biggest asset to the team. Heard one guy say he was a huge motivator and leader off the field. The guy is a former ath and power lifter. He doesnt just preach about S&C to his students, he is right there doing the same workouts with them. The kid listed below came back from injury with a goal he and Wylie set:

What you say just does not seem to add up. You say he is cancer, and yet you admit that you are a little bit bitter about him leaving. Those just don't jive. Our new coach has a good record for picking and evaluating coaches, so I trust that he knows all about this S&C coach and thinks that he will be good for our program.

No, no, no. I'm a little bitter towards him in general. His ego plus the way he tried to back-hand other S&C coaches here. I'm not bitter that he is leaving. I'm relieved. He always introduced himself as the S&C coach for TTU. He never was. He worked football only. That is just one example of the irritation he was.
I won't say he was a bad S&C guy but he wasn't anything special. For sure he wasn't all he advertised himself to be. I wish UT nothing but success and hope this worked out for you guys. I just think UT could have done better.

The same kid ruptured his quad tendon at our NFL day running his 40 yard dash a year later...under Wylie's S&G program...I'm just sayin'

Well I guess we will find out soon enough. I doubt DD will keep him around for long (not 4 or 5 years like TT and the Cowboys) if he is as bad as you say he is.

I think that the former coaching staff here didn't know much about or didn't care about what was going on in the weight room. Thus our continued mediocrity.
Again, best of luck to the Vols next season. Hopefully you can meet up with USC in a bowl game soon and whip their a$$.

I always thought your former head coach was a very sharp guy who paid attention to details and hired very good assistants. I do not understand how he would not have known about the S&C coach. Of course, anything is possible. Like I said, I bet we find out soon enough.

Have no idea what to think about this new coach. DD gave him his vote of confidence so I'm willing to give him a chance.

From what I've heard and read this guy is the real deal! The night we hired him Bruce Feldman of ESPN wrote a tweet talking about how big of a get it was for us and how superb he is. This guy not only does S&C but does offense vs. defense drills for S&C as well as one on one with the QBs. I don't see how this guy doesn't do great things here with our players.

I was checking out this board to see if Vol fans realized what a great S&C coach they got in Bennie Wylie. I read that some don't know much about Bennie and a couple of Tech fans that don't have a clue posted some negative stuff about him.

First of all the biggest thing about Bennie is he is a great man. I know Bennie and his family and they are already missed in Lubbock. I've been around college football and many coaches and Bennie is as solid as they come. A good Christian man with solid values.

It is important to understand that Mike Leach, like many HC's, used Bennie as the enforcer and his drill sergeant type of coach. Like all colleges we wine and dine the recruits for two years and then bring them in to bust their balls the day they start in campus (much like military recruitment). Bennie was tough and it was his responsibility to make sure they knew they weren't the big man on campus anymore. This was his job and he was very good at it. Never acted inappropriately, but tough. If players didn't pull their weight in practice they were pulled out of practice and sent to Bennie, not the showers.

Texas Tech competes in the Big 12 south, which behind the SEC is the toughest in the country. With the rare exception Texas Tech gets the recruits left over that Texas and Oklahoma do not want. These kids come in a little slow or undersized. Yet, you can see over the past 5 years that Texas Tech was able to compete with just about anyone. Yes, Mike Leach was an offensive guru, but the S&C program had alot to do with the over achieving of Tech teams.

Bennie will individually get to know each and every players strengths and weaknesses. Bennie will spend night and day with the team. He is always the first at the facility at 4 am and usually the last to leave. He is in every training session, practice and meeting. While coaches are grading film, Bennie will be right there trying to determine how he can make the player better.

I know in the SEC it is important in recruiting to be able to put players in the NFL. The last two seasons the strongest OL at the combine was from Texas Tech (Manny Ramirez, Louis Vasquez). One year you could say that maybe Tech just had a freak athlete, but two years in a row and you gotta think it has something to do with the S&C coach. A previous poster talked about how a player ruptured a knee tendon during his pro day, and it had nothing to do with Bennie. I know exactly what happened and why it happened, but do to confidentiality I say actaully happened. I can tell you that it had nothing to do with Bennie.

I don't have a link right now, but Bennie has had high praise from former Pro-Bowl Cowboys such as Deion Sanders, Darren Woodson and Emmitt Smith for the work he personally did with them. The guy is as good as it gets and his resume shows it. Regardless of what an idiot previous poster said he has no ego...comes across tough to players (especially freshman), but has absolutely no ego. You can spend 5 minutes with the guy away from the field and see this.

Bennie Wylie was the head S&C coach at Texas Tech (look it up) and he was a great one. Yes he spent all his time with the football program, but that is just how it works. Bennie is well thought of in the S&C community and Tennessee is lucky to have him. He is probably one of the top 5-10 in the business and I hope the best for him. With Kiffin on the sidelines I wasn't sure I could ever pull for the Vols regardless of who they were playing, but things changed overnight. I will follow the Vols closely. And for what it's worth Eric Russell is also a great coach. Probably one of the best special team coaches in the business. The dude can coach.

Thanks for the nice post tech1214, and welcome to Volnation! Best of luck to you guys this year too!

Thanks For the "Real" over view Tech. Were glad to have Bennie at UT. SCBW seems to be a great get, & could be a huge asset to our player development.
Thanks again. GBO!!!

I sure hope he trains players better than he gives radio interviews. Did anyone else catch the, "um", radio, "like", interview on Sports Animal last week?

This dude looks like a beast, hopefully he keeps pushing the players and motivates them. According to tech, he's a military instructor type, if so, that's awesome! Guys like that push players to give their all.

My brother works at the Alan Jones Aquatic Center, he says he sees more players in there all the time and while they play around alot theyre working alot more. He also says that Bennie is a beast of a man
