I was checking out this board to see if Vol fans realized what a great S&C coach they got in Bennie Wylie. I read that some don't know much about Bennie and a couple of Tech fans that don't have a clue posted some negative stuff about him.
First of all the biggest thing about Bennie is he is a great man. I know Bennie and his family and they are already missed in Lubbock. I've been around college football and many coaches and Bennie is as solid as they come. A good Christian man with solid values.
It is important to understand that Mike Leach, like many HC's, used Bennie as the enforcer and his drill sergeant type of coach. Like all colleges we wine and dine the recruits for two years and then bring them in to bust their balls the day they start in campus (much like military recruitment). Bennie was tough and it was his responsibility to make sure they knew they weren't the big man on campus anymore. This was his job and he was very good at it. Never acted inappropriately, but tough. If players didn't pull their weight in practice they were pulled out of practice and sent to Bennie, not the showers.
Texas Tech competes in the Big 12 south, which behind the SEC is the toughest in the country. With the rare exception Texas Tech gets the recruits left over that Texas and Oklahoma do not want. These kids come in a little slow or undersized. Yet, you can see over the past 5 years that Texas Tech was able to compete with just about anyone. Yes, Mike Leach was an offensive guru, but the S&C program had alot to do with the over achieving of Tech teams.
Bennie will individually get to know each and every players strengths and weaknesses. Bennie will spend night and day with the team. He is always the first at the facility at 4 am and usually the last to leave. He is in every training session, practice and meeting. While coaches are grading film, Bennie will be right there trying to determine how he can make the player better.
I know in the SEC it is important in recruiting to be able to put players in the NFL. The last two seasons the strongest OL at the combine was from Texas Tech (Manny Ramirez, Louis Vasquez). One year you could say that maybe Tech just had a freak athlete, but two years in a row and you gotta think it has something to do with the S&C coach. A previous poster talked about how a player ruptured a knee tendon during his pro day, and it had nothing to do with Bennie. I know exactly what happened and why it happened, but do to confidentiality I say actaully happened. I can tell you that it had nothing to do with Bennie.
I don't have a link right now, but Bennie has had high praise from former Pro-Bowl Cowboys such as Deion Sanders, Darren Woodson and Emmitt Smith for the work he personally did with them. The guy is as good as it gets and his resume shows it. Regardless of what an idiot previous poster said he has no ego...comes across tough to players (especially freshman), but has absolutely no ego. You can spend 5 minutes with the guy away from the field and see this.
Bennie Wylie was the head S&C coach at Texas Tech (look it up) and he was a great one. Yes he spent all his time with the football program, but that is just how it works. Bennie is well thought of in the S&C community and Tennessee is lucky to have him. He is probably one of the top 5-10 in the business and I hope the best for him. With Kiffin on the sidelines I wasn't sure I could ever pull for the Vols regardless of who they were playing, but things changed overnight. I will follow the Vols closely. And for what it's worth Eric Russell is also a great coach. Probably one of the best special team coaches in the business. The dude can coach.
