Beer (and beer pics!)

You're clearly not crazy, because by any objective measure -- alcohol percentage, calories, specific gravity -- Guinness is a relatively light beer. (Which, if you think about it, is why it floats on top of Bass, Harp, Pilsner Urquell ["a Black Czech"], etc. etc. It's lighter than all of them.) And even apart from that, floating Guinness on top of something else is going to give your taste buds more to do, which you're going to perceive as extra body or mouthfeel. If that's how you like it, go right for it.

It's only perceived as heavy by people who don't drink it that much. But in reality, what makes Guinness such a spectacular session beer is that you can drink it for hours and hours A) without getting filled up, and B) with the 15th pint tasting just as fantastic as the first. I don't know any other beer that walks along that line as well. If I drink a dozen IPAs, I'm full and drunk and I want to go lie down in the corner. If I drink a dozen yellowish beers, I don't taste any of them after about #4. But I can promise you from experience that the twentieth pint of Guinness is every bit as creamy and delicious as the first couple were.

Guinness is my favorite out of all the beers I've ever come across.

i wanna try guinness. every1 that i ask say its nasty. but i still wanna try it

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however....Guinness has been around for over 200 years, they are obviously doing something right.

Give it a try, savor the flavor, you might like it. Enjoy. I am salivating right now thinking about it.

Hands down my favorite beer, nothing comes close.

Personnally not a fan of guiness - didnt even like it Ireland and they say that if you dont like it in Ireland you will never like it..you can really taste a difference between a guiness in Ireland and a guiness in non-Ireland(?) sounds strange but its true
Although my brother has a theroy that if you drink 3 pints of something, stop drinking and try it again the next day your like it..plan on trying it out some day

From my own stand point cant beat a nice cold carling or grolsch

Carlsberg tonight for the bi-weekly poker night....OK beer, but I have a feeling that I'll get more than my fair share of it in Norway this summer....can't wait for the late spring stocking of Sam Summer to hit the shelves so that I can hit that up before I go to the northern-European brews...

Just had a 22oz Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale.

My judgement might be impaired since I had a few pints of the black stuff beforehand and finished off the Sweetwater Happy Ending.

A very nice Ale, really caramalized. It is tough, no wonder theymake fun of the "golden fizzy beer drinkers". Love where they are going with the flavor. Too bad the Georgia nazi alchohol laws block the good porters and stouts they brew.

Any of you beer "connoisseurs" know anything about Spaten Oktoberfest?

Had some in the Germany section of Epcot and got hooked. for all I know, it's the German equivalent of Steel Reserve.

Funny you mention the Stone brewing company. Look what I happen to have rattling around the house:

(Current pint of Guinness included for perspective. This is a freaking one-gallon bottle of beer.)

This is the Stone "Double Bastard," which I guess is a more evil incarnation of what you had tonight. A friend of mine from Knoxville showed up down here last week and left it here -- trying to kill me, presumably. I quote from the back: "Warning: Double Bastard Ale is not to be wasted on the tentative or weak. Only the Worthy are invited, and then only at your own risk. If you have even a modicum of hesitation, DO NOT buy this bottle. Instead, leave it for a Worthy soul who has already matriculated to the sublime ecstasy of what those in the know refer to as 'Liquid Arrogance.'"

[I want to quit quoting, but it keeps getting better. Next paragraph. Fortunately I type fast.]

"This is one lacerative muther of a beer. It is unequivocally certain that your feeble palate is grossly inadequate and thus undeserving of this liquid glory...and those around you would have little desire to listen to your resultant whimpering. Instead, you slackjawed gaping gobemouche, slink away to that pedestrian product which lures agog the great unwashed with the shiny happy imagery of its silly broadcast propaganda. You know, the one that offers no challenge, yet works very, very hard to imbue the foolhardy with the absurd notion that they are exercising 'independent' thought, or attempts to convey the perception it is in someway 'authentic' or 'original.' It's that one that makes you feel safe and delectates you into basking in the warm, fuzzy and befruddling glow of your own nescience. [V: what??] Why so many allow themselves to be led by the nose lacks plausible explanation. Perhaps you have been so lulled by the siren song of ignorance, that you don't even notice your white knuckle grip on it. You feel bold and unique, but alas are nothing but sheep, willingly being herded to and fro. If you think you are being piqued in this text, it is nothing when compared to the insults we are all asked to swallow streaming forth from our televisions. Truth be told, you are being coddled into believing you are special or unique by ethically challenged "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" marketing exec-types. Double Bastard Ale calls out the garrulous caitiffs [again: what??] who perpetrate the aforementioned atrocities -- and those that buy into them -- and demands retribution fo rtheir outrageously conniving, intentionally misleading, blatantly masturbatory and fallacious ad campaigns. We demand the unmitigated, transparent truth. We demand forthright honesty. We want justice! Call 'em out and line 'em up against the wall... NOW."

I'm not sure I've ever been insulted by a bottle of beer like that before. (And yes, all that is on the back of the bottle -- there's about as much space on the back as a sheet of notebook paper, after all.) I will say this, though -- the beer itself backs up the bravado. I like hoppy, high-gravity IPAs, but drinking this is like having Mike Tyson dressed up in a beer suit hitting you in the face with a sledgehammer.

(In other words: highly recommended!)

anyone had shock top? very similar to blue moon. pretty good

I see shock top in all the Krogers in my area.

looked for shock top last night, they didn't have it,
when I said it was like blue moon, they suggested White Rascal, Belgian Style Wheat Ale, from Avery Brewing Co.
So I gave it a shot

It was very close to Blue Moon, but with a heavier, and stronger flavor
poured just like a German Weiss,
overall very nice wheat beer

10.99 a six pack

Had some Mendocino Spring Bock and I recommend it. It's really flavorful but goes down smooth like a liquor but not nearly as harsh. 9.99 at McScrooges in Knoxville.

If anyone is in the Murfreesboro area, there is a beer tasting at Wall Street on the Square Wednesday night starting at 6:30. 10 bucks, 10 beers, snacks and a complimentary glass.

It's all high alc beer.

Avery is a good brewery, I would also recommend their IPA and Brown Ale.

My current favorite is Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA (high alc). I have also been drinking Blackstone Nut Brown and Terrapin India Style Brown Ale. If you like IPA's and Brown Ale's, I recommend the Terrapin highly, it's the best of both worlds.

I picked up a bottle of Heineken and Bud American Ale tonight at the store. They didn't have Kirin, though. I want to try that. Anyways, about to break into one of them. I've had Heine before, but can't remember if I enjoyed it or not.

Sam Adams Summer Ale shipped out weekend before last...so my favorite beer of all will soon be arriving for your drinking pleasure. I had my first glasses of draft beers tonight, because I was out of town to Cincinnati this weekend...but I got my fair share in tonight...very nice, glad to have it back.

Good stuff.

I love the Sam Adams Winter Lager and I really like the White Ale too.

Has anyone tried the 1554?

1554 is decent, but when it comes to New Belgium I prefer Fat Tire or Blue Paddle (if you can find it).

Just tried the Terrapin Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout. Amazing high grav. I also picked up a Fort Collins Brewing Company Double Chocolate Stout. I am going to crack that open after dinner.

High grav beer tasting last night was good (although I need to get the list of beers the next time I work). My personal favorites were the Abita Jockamo IPA, Old Chub Scottish Ale, and a Belgian Trippel (forgot the name).
