Imagine, if you will.......

* We hire Kiffin.
* We start to get competitive with the top dogs in year 4-5.
* Saban retires.
*Kiffin bolts for bama.

Just think of the crap we’d take for that! I say leave him where he is. There are plenty of other capable coaches.

We haven't even rehired him yet and you've already got him bolting for Alabama. Siiiggghhhh

Basillo went on the on air (1/18) and stated:

"Lane Kiffin has reached out to our booster base and made it clear he wants the job."

"I was told this today at 2:49 p.m. by a booster. He said Lane called as soon as soon as it was official."

TIFWIW...

Maybe AD White can get it done ??
Lane Kiffin has no home....well... a mobile home maybe. I'll be the first to admit, I didn't think we'd have a snowballs chance at getting a quality head coach unless we took a gamble and went with Freeze or Kiffin. Don't get me wrong, I think both are capable of turning our program around quickly. I won't complain if we hire either one. Having said that, I didn't think we could do any better at the time, but now that we've managed to hire an AD of the caliber and reputation of White, I think we might have doors opening that we couldn't imagine earlier. We might be able to get in with guys who can get the job done but come with much less risk. This AD hire gives me hope.

Let’s interview Lane Kiffin with an open mind to see if he’s still the opportunistic punk kid who left us high and dry in the middle of the night, or if he’s matured into a man who truly regrets that impulsive decision and is ready to make amends by breaking his back to restore Tennessee football to our rightful historical place at the top of the SEC vs our rivals.

Because make no mistake Tennessee has the historic brand history and tradition to compete for a SECC and NC while Ole Miss absolutely does not and never will. And a matured Lane Kiffin is the ONLY HC I can see who has what it takes to get us there. Precisely because he’s been here before. Everybody else is just another high risk placeholder, another crapshoot.

If Kiffin still plays us like a punk then sure let’s kick him in the nuts before we throw him out the door. But I don’t think so this time.

A long time ago I put myself in a similar situation in my career and it gnawed at me for 15 years before I finally got the chance to go back and make it right with a vengeance. Turned out I had my dream job all along I was just too young and stupid to see it at the time.

If Kiffin is ready to recommit and lock down his commitment with certain carefully negotiated compromises then he’s absolutely number 1 on my HC candidate board.

Remember Kiffin never failed us on the field or in the locker room instead he failed the maturity test. Let’s see if time has changed anything and hear what the man has to say for himself.

Taking a better job is not failing at the maturity test. Which USC was for sure at the time.

Just imagine if the brass at USC are saying the same things you just mentioned to each other around Thanksgiving after they fire Helton. If they call Kiffin, and he is our coach, does he go? And how much would you be willing to put on it?

Look. You're a conservative person, nothing wrong with that. If you want to fear every possibility and live a conservative lifestyle that results a nice, moderate life there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. America is the land of middle class and that is a great thing.

If you want TN football to compete with the elite programs in the country to win championshios then you take risks. I would lose zero sleep because I would mitigate that risk by having a buy-out so large USC wouldn't want to pay it. Note, "wouldn't" there ok.

Also, there is a huge difference between somebody going back to a job they voluntarily left and an employer hiring someone they previously fired on a tarmac.

Big difference between someone going back to a job they voluntarily left and a employer rehiring an an employee they fired on a tarmac.

Put a "USC provision" buy-out in there. If they want him they have to pay us $25M for him. If he legitimately wants this job he understands that USC is never going to happen again and he would sign it. Lane is smart enough to understand TN has every single thing he will ever need to win a Natty. Multiple if he is good enough. We lack NOTHING but the right leadership and coach.

Add an Alabama clause too. Big, big buyout if he bolts to Bama. Must give up a child or something. (Kidding on that part)

You know nothing about me whatsoever. I was a professional fighter, and have launched multiple businesses. I have also volunteered as a firefighter, and I play men’s league rec hockey while pushing 50. I could put the things I’m afraid of in the cup holder in your Prius. This isn’t about fear. It’s about common sense.

We can be just as good as Bama. Outside of commitment we are not far apart. We were within 4-6 games of them before Saban arrived and had a similar winning % +/- 1-2%. I don't see why he would leave here if built TN into a program good enough to warrant Bama offering him the job.

Drive a YJ Jeep actually. Kudos to you on the accomplishments above. Still doesn't change my point. TN has everything Lane needs to win. He knows that. Put a large buy-out in there for USC, whomever. If you think he would be successful then there is no reason not to bring him in.
