If we hire L Smith the ONLY good thing is that he would no longer be coaching my beloved Bears.

The bad part is that he would be coaching my even more BELOVED VOLS!

per chicago tribune, rumors are unfounded and he is staying in chicago. it's going to be kippy, mark it down.

What is with all the Lovie Smith threads? Is he seriously a candidate? I know there are rumors, but I will have to see it to believe it. I think it is nothing more than rumors. If anyone has a reliable source that he indeed has interest or if UT has even talked to him, please let me know.

Watching it happen in real time yesterday, this seems to be what happened:

1) A lazy "investigative reporter" saw Calhoun's name floated by ESPN.

2) Tried to find out his itinerary.

3) OMG! Team meeting at 5:50 pm EST! OMG!
3a) Doesn't stop to check that the team meeting was scheduled one or two days prior to Kiffin leaving Tennessee.

4) Immediately announces that it MIGHT be to announce departure for Knoxville.

5) Internet immediately changes "MIGHT" to "IS".

Interwebz rumor millz away!

I agree. It will help with the fans accepting Kippy. It will make it look like MH did everything he could. He is trying to save his job.

After thinking about it, the only place that that UT can get a coach from is the pro ranks. If a coach from another team comes, it will appear (rightly so) that he is doing the same thing to his team that Kiffin & Co. did to UT. And with the bad press that Kiff has gotten in the past few days, I just don't believe that another college coach would want to be the focal point of that press conference.

Hell, as long as we're throwing out pro coaches' names, why not Bill Belichick? Dude is a Tennessee native and a football genius. You think a recruit wouldn't want to come play for that guy? The New England dynasty is over (finally) and he has nothing more to prove at the pro level. Talk about some buttholes puckering around the SEC if he stepped up to the podium and put on an orange cap.

Lot of people talking about the "smoke" with Lovie were also characters this offseason who spoke of "smoke" with another coach. Next time it'll be Cowher.
