I'm not impressed. Why would he want to come to Tennessee? He doesn't strike me as a college guy. IMO he's just a tick better than Cutty.

He coached at TN on his way up the ladder, and he is on the hot seat in Chicago. It was thought he may get fired at the end of this season, but they basically gave him one more year to produce. Although he was not fired, he was forced to change his staff.

Well, how about Lovie as the target and Cutty as the fall-back position? That would make sense, although I would hire ANYBODY instead of Butt-Cutt.

He could bring in a Rodney Garner or maintain Lance Thompson as DC, as Lovie is a D guy and could apprentice/mentor these aspiring coaches....

This is a the BEST scenario yet...

I am a huge Bears fan. I don't think some of you pay any real attention to him. For the LOVE OF GOD, hire him.

The real question is...

Is he a Mormon?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

Nope.

Smith is a devout Christian and has contributed to Brown's Chapel, his former Methodist church in Texas, every month even though he no longer resides in Texas.[19]

As a Bears fan...No.

Lovie sucks a big one. Terrible staff choices, no recruiting ties, would be AWFUL against the spread.

Just kill me. The choices appear to be: Bad, Worse, and "Where's a bridge"?

If you're a Bears fan, you know as well as I do Jerry Angelo (GM) was the main problem. Ron Turner being retarded was probably our 2nd biggest problem the past few years.

Lovie isn't terrible. His boss and the people around him are/were. Lovie's problem was he wouldn't can them quick enough, or Angelo might not have allowed it. I don't know. Lovie probably sees the Bears in a realistic view: Angelo will be deep-sixed after next year, which means Lovie is done too. He is working with an entirely new staff with the Bears in '10, so why not just head out now?

on smith's wiki page it says he resigned his HC with the bears and is coming to TN:

After the season's conclusion, the Bears organization announced that Smith would return in 2010. However, the organization fired offensive coordinator Ron Turner and three other offensive coaches. Smith was relived of his defensive play calling responsibilities, while Babich was officially demoted as the team's defensive coordinator.[17]

On January 14, 2010, Smith resigned as head football coach of the Chicago Bears and accepted the head coaching position at the University of Tennessee. Smith replaces Lane Kiffin, who unceremoniously left the Tennessee program after 14 months as the Volunteer head coach. Smith becomes the first African-American coach in the history of the University of Tennessee.

Lot of buzz on the net about this one. Lots of people around the NFL think this may have some validity. I think he would be a great recruiter just because of name recognition. Brent Hubbs also reporting that not a done deal with Coach Cut. Says he talked to Cut personally.

I just don't believe it,why would he leave the NFL as a head coach to go to a college head coach? if he had of been fired I think the Vols would have a chance

he was offered in 08, has ties to tn. and last i checked the nfl is a step above CF. could be good if we could get him, interesting to see what kind of staff he could bring together for the gig also.

This imo would be a good hire. plenty of college experience he even coached lb's at tennessee he's got pro experience on his resume and a appearance in the Super Bowl. He is a defensive minded coach but is decent on offense, with a good OC he could be an extremely good hire. But then we run into the problem of no chance in heck we get him.

The Suburban Media is in on the Lovie Smith Act. Link

Just spoke with another source...This one deep inside the football program who says that he believes there is some smoke on the Lovie Smith thing. Could this be true? Remember....I'm not saying it is...But could it be???? He made a call for me after talking with him and came back with 'this thing could have legs'.

This Basilio guy breathlessly reports literally every whisper he hears as a smoking hot rumor. And his hit or miss ratio is basically no better than somebody who just sat there and made stuff up, right?

Personally if I was Lovie I would take the offer and run...

To be honest I'm surprised the Bears brought him back for 2010, the owners are giving him one more season to prove himself to the organization again. To me that isn't much of a security blanket, if UT was offering a seven year deal I'd take that job in a heart beat. I think he would be foolish not to take the job if offered knowing he might now have a job next off season or the supposed lockout.

They fired his whole staff, if he doesnt have a great season next year the bears will fire him.
