I wouldn't treat that as a reliable source, but it is a possibility. I believe that talks with Cut have stalled though.

Lets hope. I think Lovie knows he'll be out after next year, almost regardless of how things go this year. He's getting a lot of pressure to completely change his entire coaching staff/strategy away from being a run/defense team to being a passing team built around Cutler.

That's based on some things I heard when I was following the Redskins coaching search and Lovie was mentioned.

You know what, I'm buying this one. There, I said it. It makes a lot of sense for him to leave Chicago and he does at least have some history at UT.

Buying.

Not as ugly as Oakland circa 2008, and he took the Bears to a Super Bowl.

Actually Oakland had and still has 0 talent. Kiffin improved them while he was there. The Bears actually had a pretty solid team under Smith and underperformed repeatedly.

I would have two concerns here. 1. Don't know that Smith has any college experience. If he is an NFL guy, the last thing you want is for him to jump ship in a year or two for another NFL gig. Things are turning against him in Chicago, and the general consensus is that if it weren't for his buyout, they would have fired him already. 2. Is he a good coach? I honestly don't know that he is. He took the Bears to the Super Bowl, but he really has been pretty miserable other than that. Interesting if he comes down though. Probably cause some excitement initially, which is big in today's recruiting game.

I didn't factor him in, but I would be satisfied with this hire, much more so than Muschump or Cutcliffe.

He has been to two Super Bowls, one as an assistant and one as a head coach. As a head coach, thats more than you can say for Saban, Spurrier, or Carrol.

If anyone's complaining about this hire with some of the other possibilities that have been thrown out there they need to have their head checked.

Looks like someone already edited wikipedia

"On January 14, 2010, Smith resigned as head football coach of the Chicago Bears and accepted the head coaching position at the University of Tennessee. Smith replaces Lane Kiffin, who unceremoniously left the Tennessee program after 14 months as the Volunteer head coach. Smith becomes the first African-American coach in the history of the University of Tennessee."

lol, jumping the gun a bit...

I really might puke if this doesn't happen now, and we do end up hiring Cutcliffe. Lovie has UT ties, and he'd be a big-splash nationally. This could possibly even save some of the recruiting class.
I think he'd do well here.

I'm not impressed. Why would he want to come to Tennessee? He doesn't strike me as a college guy. IMO he's just a tick better than Cutty.

I... don't think I would either, honestly. I'd take Calhoun over him. Idk why. Cause i'm a flippin expert that is why. dangit.

I would love the Smith hire, only been a few years removed from the Bears Super Bowl run and is only 50 or so years old...

As a Bears fan...No.

Lovie sucks a big one. Terrible staff choices, no recruiting ties, would be AWFUL against the spread.

Just kill me. The choices appear to be: Bad, Worse, and "Where's a bridge"?

I know I'd be really ticked if we hired a coach that was NFL coach of the year 5 years ago.

We don't want a head football coach that has been to a super bowl and has sustained his job for awhile, has UT ties and is a high character guy? Tell me what I'm missing here.

This could be true, but I don't believe for one second that Muschamp turned Tennessee down because of talent. If you are a coach and are confident you get talent. It isn't going to be handed to it. IF it is true, I am glad he turned it down. Doesn't have what it takes.

On Lovie Smith - that would be awesome... needs to surround himself with great coordinators. I think Chaney would stay and Thompson would be DC...

Kippy would stay and fill in the rest.

Anybody else not really like this hire either? Better than Cutcliffe, but I'm not jumping up and down with this either. The Bears are one ugly football team to watch.

Bears were in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago and that was with a QB not much better than the early season Crompton!

He coached at Tennessee from 93-94.

And he coached at Tulsa, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Ohio State...

He would be awesome!

I'll say this, as an Alabama fan who was forced to watch a lot of Bear's games with my old roommate, of all the names mentioned, this is the one that I like the best. Lovie Smith would be damn lucky if Tennessee throws him a life line, and Bears fans would be dancing in the streets.
