Bailey is our QB

yeah, but he's gonna earn it. if he gets beat out........
What does earn it mean? Who determines that, you or the staff? My guess is he "earned" his shot during the recruiting process when he committed to a program coming off a winless conference season over the likes of Alabama, Florida and Auburn. Blue Chip QBs seldom have a hard time "earning" the QB1 spot over young raw prospects with little experience.

I'm really not worried about the deep ball. That's more an issue of timing and working with his receivers than arm strength. That can get better with reps in practice.

I'm torn about who's the better QB. With Shrout, more plays in the playbook are available, such as the deep out. Can Shrout's ability to read defenses be coached through filmwork? I don't know the guy's work ethic off the practice field.

Ultimately if reports are accurate (reports were not accurate on recruit JG) then Salter may be the better collegiate QB than anyone currently on the roster. I want my college QB to have a superior skill, be it foot speed or arm. JG has neither. Dobbs was a good QB due to his feet. The best dual threat QB I've ever seen in a UT uniform was Heath Shuler. If I'm looking for an NFL QB, I'm much more interested in a guy who reads defenses, makes quick decisions and can fire darts.
we are thinking exactly alike!

it would be dumb to just hand him the keys. if u dont work for something how do you appreciate it? Plus Slater is coming in right behind him. This is why u cont to recruit. remember what people thought of maurer before we actually saw him?

BM is in and was always in the same situation that JT was in the day HB committed. Good talent, needs development, has gained experience but is in the same boat as JT when it comes to the little nuances of the game. I think maturity has been one thing that has held BM back but regardless, I think it was still always going to be HB and that he wasn't brought here to sit the bench for 3 years to BM or JT.

Now the Vols have 2 QB’s, the big question is, can either of them win in the SEC, with any consistency?
According to this board we would have won a bunch more this year had we switched earlier, funny thing, I don't see many of them predicting victory Sat now that the switch has been made.

I think he needs to drop the long passes in from a higher trajectory. He overthrew on a couple of long line drives. The receiver couldn't run under it.

That's timing. If he holds the ball a fraction of a second longer, he'll hit the long line drives

Having a cannon for an arm isn't a guarantee for success in the NFL (Bray). Being smart would be a superior quality to have for success. The internal clock can be learned and reading defenses and coverages comes with good coaching and film analysis. I'm like everyone else when it comes to JP leaving JG as his starter so long. The two pick sixes and fumbles would have done it or me. Thanks for your efforts, JG! Best of luck in life. We've moved on now!

GO VOLS!!!
I agree with the arm strength point. The HOF is loaded with QBs who had “arm strength “ issues. Probably the most over emphasized quality of a great QB IMO.

Strout has a strong arm and is a gunslinger. Problem with him is like today throwing off his back foot and into double coverage. I like him but Bailey is better all around.
Shrout is more polished at this point compared to Bailey but Shrout is a 3rd year guy. Shrout can throw that ball and has command of the offense but he is a gun slinger that will throw ints. Bailey has way more upside and will be a true freshman next year with experience and will be a better QB . Shrout could stay and be a good backup and maybe help at times and transfer at the end of next year. Maurer is out the door I believe he could have been good just injury's hurt him. JG is gone also so hopefully next year Bailey Shrout and Salter.

It's not even close. Bailey is head and shoulders above the competition right now. Game #2 as a true Freshman and he's reading the defense well, making good decisions, and he was much more accurate this game, after struggling with a few throws last week. He's not that fast, but he knows exactly when to tuck it and run. And his only turnover was the biggest BS turnover I've ever seen; that was an incomplete pass and anyone who thinks otherwise is blind.

Shrout is better than JG and has the best arm on the team, but he still struggles with reading the defense and making decisions at times. He's definitely improved, though; he's much better than he was last season. But he's still got a way to go. 6/13 for 90 yards with an INT against a below-average SEC defense isn't going to cut it against anyone other than Vandy.
6/13 with 3 drops, 2TDs you so obviously left out and a pick he threw while getting smashed because of a porous and underachieving O-line. Until Bailey starts completing passes down the field I'll hold off on proclaiming him the savior of the program. We'll never fully know how good either Bailey or Shrout can be until we get rid of Weinke and get an actual O line coach. Tee hasn't done much with the receivers either if we're being honest. We're still in a much better place than we ever were with JG under center. That'll forever be Pruitt's legacy.

Shrout throwing off his back foot is directly attributable to our lackluster O line. We won't really know which one will be the guy until sometime next year. A game and a half isn't going to decide anything. Salter may blow them both out of the water. It'll come down to which one Chaney likes. If they keep dragging out this covid lockdown through the spring we may be in for a repeat of this past spring.

You’d admit that a month of playing time would have prepared them better?
Depends on the team's situation. I can see where it could both help and hurt. I think our offense got very little practice with key personnel this fall and it effected us on that side of the ball, I'm not so sure putting them in a month earlier vs Bama and GA would have done them or the program much good. Impossible to predict really. I personally am pleased with Bailey's development, maybe he's looked good only because Pruitt has been patient with him. Hard to say I guess.

Patience from Pruitt is a rare commodity for 84/85 players on the roster.

A freshman QB was the least of Butch’s problems.
True, but if Guarantano would’ve been a true dual threat as he was advertised, Butch would’ve been able to keep getting by with his quick 250 lb lineman. Unfortunately Guarantano has concrete feet and was killed behind butchs oline. Dobbs made Jones’s offense work for the most part, because he was a great runner, and was good at eluding the pass rush.

Of all the QB’s on our current roster, only 1 has an NFL arm and that’s JT Shrout. Sure he’s made some dumb throws but he’s not had much playing time. He’ll get a shot in the NFL some day and it’s a shame this staff has wasted that talent
Ever heard of Peyton Manning? He wasn't known for his big arm. Jamarcus Russell could throw it out of the stadium - how did his career go?

Hint: you might be looking at the wrong things in your QB evaluation.

I'm curious if anyone on here knows what went down behind the scenes with the decision to bench Guarantano. It's hard for me to believe Coach Pruitt suddenly had a change of heart. Was there outside pressure? Was this Guarantano's decision etc? Don't get me wrong I absolutely think we should have went with Bailey much earlier. I believe we beat Kentucky, Auburn and Arkansas with Bailey at QB. Just curious about how it happened?

I've been wondering the same thing and there are no satisfactory answers from CJP that I've heard. I'm thinking any answer would imply he would have to admit he's been wrong all year.

He is just better. Shrout may have an edge for deep throws, but that’s it. HB makes better reads and decisions.
Listened to VQ react podcast. Bailey has played ablot of football and it shows. Has that sixth sense, once he and WRs are on same page, watch out.

He's got to learn to taken a shot as well as grt tough throw in there. These sacks will mount up.

At some point you have to make a decision on the future.
