Back From Bay Area Thoughts

I know, I know... It's just that painting it like they were doing that intentionally doesn't logically add up.

Milo...it is possible that they didn't really put it together that they shouldn't be doing that for some amount of time. Just because you have football sense doesn't mean they do. Either they pay no attention to what is going on on the field....or they decided the injury timeout would be a good time to put in an unpaid plug for their conference, because it happened and happened for a good amount of time.

Ya, there were a few idiots in the crowd, and as an Old Blue I apologize for them. Keep in mind one third of all freshmen at UC never graduate, I would bet you ran in more than your fair share of those who will get their diploma elsewhere. I saw one tool dressed in blue jump in front of a camera trying to get a shot of the Vol fan section and do his impression of Ozzie Ozbourne, tongue out pinkie and thumbs raised on the “rock on" hand gesture. How foolish. I hope you never see your fellow fans act the fool at your home games.
As to when Mitchell went down, there was noise form the student section at first, I believe because they couldn’t see what was going on, he was on the eastern sideline and they couldn’t see him due to the press of bodies , but the place was silent once they figured it out. If you are saying there was noise after the first two minuets, one of us has to get our hearing checked. I know over in the alumni section where we saw the hit, you could have heard a pin drop until he gave that little wave of the hand, then the cheering was pretty loud.
I left Lefty O’Doul’s around 7:30 on Friday night so I can remember a whole lot of polite and friendly folks dressed in orange; sorry you got such a bad impression of the folks dressed in blue.

Knowing Pac-10 stadiums decently well, I'd say that's usually a distinct possibility. Except for the big ones, like this one.

i'm not saying it was unintentional, but i think your looking into it too much. i doubt the cal band all decided together that it was a good idea to play their fight song because xavier was down.

Not because, but definitely in spite of the fact.

once again, i'm not saying it was intended to jeer at the injured player, but they seemed to not get that you just don't do that when a player is down.

I calling BS on this one. If I remember correctly, they were still chanting when ESPN went to commercial...

I call BS too, after about a half dozen trainers raced onto the field is when the chanting actually really started! If they were paying any attention at all the chanting would have stopped WAY before it actually did!

This is my only real gripe with CAL fans on my visit.

Their not going to catch everything, guys. They are human. I am more upset about an alleged "catch" in 2000 which was in broad daylight as opposed to some official catching a clip or to that is occuring while chaos is going on while they are running to catch up with the play and trying to get out of the way.

The refs were a non-factor in this game.

I was at the game and agree that we were woefully "vanilla" most of the game on defense which told me we were afraid of the big play....however you must mix things up some becasue their QB ate us alive when he had time which was most of the night.

I'm not trying to say the Ref's were a factor....but after watching my Tivo'ed HD replay I want to point out a few no calls that are the type that can change a game:

1. I counted three obvious off-sides by Cal that were not called.

2. I saw two no calls on what I thought were obvious Pass Interference situations on drives in the 4th quarter. On the other hand, they called a pretty tiky tak PI against us that got them out of a big hole when they had the ball inside our five.

3. I am surprised on the goal line situation where we did not score they did not review the catch by our reciever on second down. He bobbled the ball but caught it before going down....it looks like his knee hit down in the endzone first.

4. On their first TD drive of the game.....a long completion to Jackson on third down that gave them a first down deep on our territory.....if you watch it the ball hits the ground and should not have been a completion. Heffney was pointing it out but they never considered a revew.

I'm not making excuses but take a look at these plays yourself and note that the little, subtle plays can defineately effect the ebb and flow of a game!

I thought about this too when it happened and also thought he had possession of the football. I kept waiting for the review but it never happened. There was a possibility though, that there wasn't enough evidence to overturn it.

You had the privilege of watching the game for a second time on TiVo or DVR, where as the referees and I had to see it in real time. I didn't see anything that was so glaring in real time that would have affected the outcome of that game. The DVR can make any game look like a poorly refereed game if you break down enough plays.

One thing I observed is that the perception (by the media & otherwise)that the PAC-10 is weak, compared to the SEC is a HUGE sore spot for Cal fans. I understand why it would be to a point, but I never thought it was that big-of-a-deal to them, but it is!

The second half of the Florida game last year was no better... but but but, Cutcliffe is an offensive genius. He coached Peyton and Eli... whatever.

Shut up, TVA. Everyone knows it's you. Get out of here. This is a stupid point to make. That was the finest job Cutcliffe has done in his second term in Knoxville.

It's a sore spot for fans of all Pac-10 teams not named USC. Cal, especially, sinced they got whipped in Knoxville a year ago.

VIA, me and CBC both saw the blocks in the back that happened on the punt return. As far as the "fumble" for a TD that happened, it was a 50/50 shot at getting turned over. I have seen calls when the ball goes behind the QB called an incomplete pass as well as the other way around. The main thing me and CBC noticed was the way the game was called. I mean was it me or wasn't SEC officials supposed to call the game?? Did all the refs in the SEC get sick and weren't able to ref?? I thought that was despicable and the PAC-10 refs pretty much went with calling the game for Cal all night long. We didn't get a call for us all game pretty much and that PI call was on Karl not Johnson which is why the ball was only placed at the 16 of Cal. Other that that it was a good game other than special teams and D, we had a great game otherwise.

If last year's Florida game was his best coaching effort, than we have nothing to look forward to in 2 weeks.

Don't hate a player. Everything I've said is starting to fall into place. The only thing I may be wrong about is finishing 8-4... it might be worse.

I know, I'm just trying to fit the pieces together.

People see injured guy.. And start cheering. Does not compute.

Is there something in Berkeley that I don't know about? Like if a guy gets hit by a car, do people in Berkeley just start chanting "Pac-10 football!"?

Man... I guess there really isn't any such thing as common decency on the west coast. Looks like I need to get the hell out.

Could you be a little more defensive? I honesty think you are happy Cal won the game. And what is the West Coast crap? I don't get upset when someone insults a Floridian. Get over it. You act like everyone is retarded for having an SEC bias, but then you behave in an even more extreme manner toward the West Coast.

Yeah. I am absolutely ecstatic that Cal won the game. I get all teary-eyed when somebody insults my poor lil' west coast. We know football tooooooooo!!! :cray:

UT could easily have lost that Florida game by 3 TDs. The fact that we put up any points at all with our pathetic O-line against their NFL All Star line is astounding. Running the clock out in the fourth quarter was our only hope. Having Ainge continue to air it out would result in an interception or maybe a fumble return for a TD, a la the first drive against Cal.

I'm tired of reading through your 30+ posts a day about how no one respects the West Coast. We just played a West Coast team. What the hell do you expect?

I counted two that looked like blocks in the back initially, but if you rewatch them enough, starts to look like blocks in the side.

That's what I thought. When I saw it live, I was pretty sure they were in the back. I can definitely see how someone would think that. If you watch the replay though, you have to change your mind.

1. After Jackson started going upfield there was a block in the back about 4 yards behind him.

2. When he got past the 50 there was a block in the back on someone around the 40-50 of UT.

We're talking theory now. Would it really have mattered? I'm just saying in every replay I have seen I have not viewed a 100% block in the back from any Cal player.

I'll blame an offical before most but the reason he returned that punt was because, as I think GAVol put it, it looked like Middle Schoolers trying to get at him.

I've made my points earlier... If you're tired of reading my posts, then block me.
