Aviation

The one that really gets my heart up in the US is Orange County/John Wayne. The runway is really really short, and there are lots of small civilian airplanes around.

My wife flew into there last weekend and is flying out today. I was reading online about the takeoff requirements for noise abatement from there. Can you talk about that a little bit. Is it an unusual climb out? Do you find that you have unusual take off/landing requirements for a lot of different airports or are most of them standard and boring?

Somebody suggested a thread where I (and hopefully 79) can answer some of your questions. I'll try to do that, but sometimes I have to be careful with this. Just so ya know.

Here's a video - it's a commercial - but it gives you a good idea of what it is like over the North Atlantic on a daily basis. Enjoy.

How often do you have to eject paying customers?

Nice vid SCV. Your doing my dream. Back in 1991 I was 19 years old and seen an ad in the paper that said "Take a free 30 minute introductory flight". I went and was up in a Cessna 152 within an hour. They know how to get you because the instructor took me straight out over Cherokee Lake and said take the yoke. He said "Your flying". Had me do some simple maneuvers but I was hooked.

The stalls and spins were heart stopping at first but then I enjoyed them. As a kid I was enjoying the thrill but realized this was very important to get out of bad situations. The lessons were through Kalitta flying service in Morristown, Tn. My first time I soloed I turned in to final approach (announcing the whole time to Morristown traffic) and all the sudden hear "this is Lear blah blah blah on Final for runway 23". I was like wtf he's ignored and is over taking me. So I announce to traffic a go around. My instructor was pissed off at the kalitta lear pilot but praised my reaction.

Did some short field take off and landings on grass in a piper that was a blast.

Did some IFR approaches at TYS with the hood on in a Cessna 172 with my brother and first cousin in the back seat freaking out. Lol

Embry-Riddle actually was going to fly me down for free trying to recruit me and I let my highschool sweetheart talk me out of it.

My extended solo I had the choice of flying to Memphis or Myrtle Beach. Chose MB ofcourse but the price of that was just to much for my parents considering I would've had to pay for everything (rental and fuel) and get reimbursed at a later date.

Absolutely the most (legal) fun I have had in my life and I am thinking of going back and finishing everything up now. Still have my logbook. Still have my Hard Rock shirt from when I soloed that was cut off me and signed.

I know alot of you all have flown, but check with your local airports about an introductory flight. You can go take it and not sign up for lessons.

On a side note back then I was at the airport everday studying. We knew he was arriving at some point but we heard Rusty Wallace announcing he was on final approach and ran outside. He flew his own jet prop 12 to 15 seater (cant remember model). He come at full speed, landing gear up, and no more than 20 feet off the runway. Halfway down the runway he banks a hard left hand turn and comes back around and lands. There was like three women, four kids in the 5 to 7 range and a couple of associates got off the plane white faced. Rusty got off absolutely laughing his azz off. A couple of the kids was crying and I thought what an azzhole.

Anyways great thread SCV.

Edit- why is this is in the politics thread? Needs moved to the pub for more eyeballs.

Vertically the closest you will be is 1000' Horizontally over the Atlantic is 30 miles but that is going to 15 miles in the not too distant future. Domestic airspace is a little different in terms of horizontal, and maybe 79 will address that, but 1000' vertically is the norm.

Five miles lateral in the en-route environment, unless @ATC_VOL screws up

edit: I see this was already discussed. Carry on.

Man the news just sucks on this. Any word on the pilot? "One person killed" Who the **** was it?
Blue Angels just crashed in Smyrna I'm hearing...
Terrible. One person dead. Budget cuts and A shoestring budget gets people killed.
Sad stuff. My airspace is above MQY, and they had their TFR set up to practice right as I was leaving work.

I was working at Tri-Cities at the time. Actually fueled his aircraft the day they arrived in Smyrna. My guard unit responded to the crash site.

Smyrna has a nice memorial for Captain Kuss if any of you are ever able to stop by.

I’ve had my private pilots license for a little over a year. I had to start and stop training several times due to life getting in the way, finances.. etc. it was the most satisfying thing I’ve done in my lifetime. I wish I’d have been more focused in my younger years and tried to make a career of it. I never had the desire to fly for the airlines but always thought flying corporate would be cool. Eventually I’d like to get my instrument rating and maybe even my commercial and CFI and do some instructing as a side gig.

If it is something you have ever really wanted to do I say by all means give it a go. Go take lessons as often as you can and if you can only go once a month then only go once a month. Just stay at it. People would tell me all the time that if I couldn’t go fly at least once or twice a week I was wasting my time and money because it would take me forever to finish if I even did. I refused to listen. I was very motivated and focused and studied hard and when I couldnt fly I just studied more. I still ended up getting it done in 60 hours and spent around 7k.
Morristown (MOR). Is a great place to train.

Did they also take over the school at TRI?

My dad got his multi engine rating back in the 80s with Evelyn B Johnson.

Yes they did. I actually live really close to TRI but with what all it takes to get in the gate now I just drive to Morristown to fly. I actually think the school at MOR stays busier. At least for awhile it was

Mrs. Johnson did my dad’s multi engine check ride back in the mid 70s. I’ve always heared there are pictures of her and Lindbergh together. Lol.

I grew up right next to TRI and worked at the FBO for a few years. Did your dad fly in the area?

Well not for a living. He was a pro wrestler and he wrestled all over southeast. He flew to and from the matches. He had his commercial but he never flew for hire. He had a nice Cessna 310 but once he stopped wrestling he stopped flying and sold it.

My old man has a 310 as well. Really nice plane to fly in when I get the chance, speaking purely as a passenger.

I spent many a night out at the airport because of a 310. 90FC and 30LP if I remember correctly. They would send in a team of doctors to harvest kidneys and take them back to Vandy or up to AGC. I bet you’ve worked them, based out of Nashville.

Evelyn is a LEGEND. I took a couple of lessons from her back in the 80s... I think she was 80 at the time. She called me her Chinese pilot because I always flew One Wing Low. True story.

RIP Evelyn, you were the best.

My dad has a good story about her pulling an engine off during his Checkride that he loves to tell.

It is better to get back into the air rather than land with some sort of issue. A missed approach or rejected landing is a very safe maneuver. It is a little uncomfortable sometimes for passengers as it is fairly abrupt and the perception is unusual because you are going from a descent to a 2000 foot per minute climb. I always try to make an announcement as soon as possible to explain why we are going around. There are many reasons, but there is no need to be worried. (I know, easy for me to say)

Had this happen to me years ago at DCA. We were on approach close to touchdown and all the sudden the engines roared and up we went.

Looked down and saw that another aircraft had turned onto the runway.

I was talking to somebody about the NYC airports 10 or 15 years ago and they were saying that either LaGuardia or Kennedy was difficult to land because the approach had to be very steep. I've not noticed during the 4 or 5 times that I've had a flight land at LaGuardia. Were they making that up, is it Kennedy that's challenging, or did I just not notice that we were diving into NYC? Or maybe it depends which direction the plane lands at Laguadia?

Every time I fly into or out of LGA I’m prepared to die. That runway on the water with birds and other planes always crisscrossing....

And if you don’t die going in, you are very likely to get stuck on the run way for 2+ hours, especially in the summertime.
