Automobilia etc....

my car will be 13 in January. It's just a Corolla, but it's the most dependable car I've ever seen. Seen, not just had. Never once had any engine trouble. 246k miles and I've only replaced the clutch once, starter once, 2 batteries, serpentine belt once, and the driver rear wheel hub because the bearings were going. Other than that it's just been regular oil changes, breaks and tires.

As a non drinker in the Army, I get to DD a lot and I always insist on taking someone else's car, so that's my way of getting to drive lots of cool cars.

Saw a Tesla SUV for the first time today, at the Clubhouse, when we went for brunch

The interior of it was awesome, the leather was impressive and an absolute pure white..I couldn't imagine putting kids in it, but there was a sippy cup in the console

Germany Votes to Ban Sales of Internal-Combustion Vehicles by 2030 ? News ? Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog

I'm fine with this. I like the old internal combustion engine as much as the next person, but I feel like electric cars can be superior.

Three factors are on my mind though:

Weight- it is the killer of fun. Sure you can add power to a car, but a light car is delightful. I'd take a 2500lb car that has 200hp over a 3500lb car that has 300hp. Handling means a lot to me.

Range- I think this will be a non issue by 2030. But I just want to be able to make a road trip in the same time as a gas car. How can charging be improved?

Noise- I don't care if it is synthesized, I just want something a bit more evocative that a whir.

So can electric cars have manual transmissions?

Even for shifting automatics the noise is a key part of driving while keeping eyes focused on the road. Sure you can incorporate heads up displays for the tach but the visceral parts of driving are critical to the fun.

One can hope for e-car superiority.

The elements like lithium aren't so easy to come by.

I'd rather not own the battery. I'd much rather stop in at a recharge station, drop off the old one, pick up a recharged one, and be off again. Much like the industry standard diameter for unleaded gas filler tubes. That would allow for various other battery options as technology advances. It would be no problem to "recharge" regularly with lead/acid batteries for hometown daily driving within the range. But for long trips, pay the premium price for the higher tech/cost/range lithium or whats new. All batteries, vehicle attachment, cable connectors, etc..would be the same. Recharge time would not be the users problem, but only the choice of range.

Some folk are thinking carbon nanotube super capacitor technology or battery/capacitor hybrids might be an answer instead of batteries.

I've always liked the idea of making the batteries replaceable. Thing is though, that would take a non manufacturer stepping in and developing the batteries. I'm certain Honda wouldn't be too interested in developing batteries that would also fit in a Nissan. Perhaps this is where the oil companies step in. You swap your batteries at your local shell or BP.

I can't comprehend the audacity it took to say and act on the idea, that 845 h.p. wasn't enough.

it's a concept so unfortunately it will be much more muted when comes to market. it's just a rebadged Nissan and initially no plans for US market.
