The only thing stopping me from being an All-American was my height and weight that slowed me down- but that was when they had single bar facemasks.
You cannot objectively state that every play or player when in in posession of a pass should or even can take it to the house. You are ignoring where the ball was thrown, when it was thrown in the route, the coverage they are facing, the positioning of the cover man, what the cover man does (goes for the INT or the knockdown, does he play face up or what's his technique?)the position of the receiver when he makes the attempt, and down and distance. Most of the times when you see players turning simple curl routes or deep posts into TD's is when the coverage (one man to beat) dictates the play. Or someone in the secondary is out of position and busts the coverage pattern.
At the college level, it takes a QB and WR to recognize and adjust to it. For UT this season, it was a rarity. For example, against a deep Tampa 2, you'll never see someone bust one deep for a score-unless someone fails to make a tackle. Sometimes you see an elite athlete just blow by someone. But what you see on TV only tells you some of the story.
Austin, given the above circumstances, has the skills to do that- but like every receiver, it has to be the right circumstances. He was given ample chances by the coaching staff to make home-run types of plays. That has to say something about their faith in his ability to actually get off of the line and away from coverage, run the route correctly and on time. The other parts of the play that would make it work are not controlled by him. He is just one element, and for the most part, he apparently graded out well.
Will he go down as an All-American? Nah, but he is someone who you know will do his best to get the job done. Do we need an upgrade in talent at this position? Yes, but we need upgrades across the board as we all know. From listening to the talk here, it's like he couldn't beat out Benji Shuler. He isn't any Willie Gault, but we haven't had those recently anyway.
