Auburn hires Bruce Pearl

You know what really will cause a meltdown? If the "Martin isn't happy" stuff is true and he bolts, meaning there was going to be an opening anyway, and yet this proves Pearl was never an option.

auburn wasn't worried about tennessee. tennessee isn't firing its coach.

auburn was worried about the schools who are looking for a coach.

It was definitely not a given that Martin would be retained if they didn't get a bid (which they just barely did).

Which is where the saying "be careful what you wish for" comes into play.

It will take longer to build his program at Auburn. But he's won everywhere he has coached. Stands to reason he will win at Auburn, too. If he didn't return to Tennessee, I was really hoping he would wind up coaching away from the SEC.

Building a basketball program is a lot easier than building a football program. You can immediately change the program with 1 class.

Auburn hired Bruce Pearl as its new basketball coach Tuesday, bringing in a frequent visitor to the NCAA Tournament, a coach with SEC experience, a three-time national coach of the year and fan favorite.

Pearl coached at Tennessee from 2005 through the 2011 season, taking all six of his teams to the NCAA Tournament. He's been an ESPN basketball analyst the last several seasons.

"I'm humbled and blessed to be back in the game that I love," Pearl said. "I don't know how long it will take, but it's time to rebuild the Auburn basketball program, and bring it to a level of excellence so many of the other teams on campus enjoy."
