You are not as powerful as you thought you were. Yesterday you tried to hire a despicable human being as our new head coach. The response of the Tennessee fan base to this travesty was instant and profound, and in a matter of hours we galvanized the media and even our own politicians against you until you had no choice but to back down. We are a proud fan base, and we proved yesterday we don't just have pride, we have power. Actual, enforceable power that must be respected.
We applaud your decision to undo your grave mistake, even at a financial cost, but you are not off the hook just yet. Our obvious disapproval of a terrible person like Greg Schiano does not mean that we will be just fine with anyone else. If you think you can now saddle us with any run of the mill mid-major coach and still maintain the revenue we generously provide you with, you are sadly mistaken.
If you want to keep making money, you will need to spend money. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Ante up. You will do EVERYTHING you can to bring in THE best possible coach, and it will pay off in the long run. Were you only willing to offer that dream hire 7 million before? Now you will offer him 8 million. Or 9. Or 10. Or whatever it takes. Did he just sign an extension and get a raise? Too bad, that's no longer an excuse. Bite the bullet and pay the buyout money. Is he just not interested in the program? BS, of course he is - he has his price and you just haven't offered enough to make him say yes. Now you will.
And if you say you just can't afford to do it, well...that's a bold faced lie and you certainly aren't fooling anyone. A quick google search of the net worth of some of our most prominent boosters quickly puts that notion to rest. You can afford any coach at any price. We know it, you know it, and in this moment of profound embarrassment we expect you to restore pride to this program by making a statement through your words, your actions, and your wallets. If you do so, your decision to do so will be profitable. If you don't, your decision to do so will lose money. It's that simple.
You are officially on notice. The financial impact of your decision will be immediate, dramatic, and not limited to UT athletics. Now pay up or face the consequences.
