Assuming Fulmer does go....

I'm not convinced MH has $5 million to spend after buying out the contracts of the current staff. How many coaches are we already paying who don't work for Tenn anymore? Aren't we still paying both Jerry Green (honestly I've forgotten) and Buzz Peterson?

Nah... I think they are officially off the books. I see where you're going, but $5 million/yr plus $6.4 million to buyout contracts isn't chump change...

Thanks, Ras. If we could find some younger coach who's on his way up in the coaching world, we could obviously pay less.

I seem to remember that being discussed in the media before Peterson's dismissal on how much Tenn would have available to pay a potential new coach b/c they would be paying 3 coaches...the new coach, Peterson, and Green. But I'm not familiar w/ how buyout payments are structured so...

Jon Gruden is probaly going to win the NFC south this year.

Gruden is not like Saban or Spurrier, by that I mean he can handle the pressure of the big show and doesnt have to come back to the college ranks with his tail between his legs

...what are the realistic chances the University will go "outside the family" for a replacement? I hear names like Gruden, Stoops, Tedford, Pelini, etc...

Why would Stoops leave OU for UT? It would be a lateral move--at best, leaving job where he is king.

In fact, there's not a job out there that's a step up from OU . . I think the UT job is just as good of an opportunity, but not for someone in Stoop's position.

You're gonna have to go after somebody like Pearl--at a lesser school but showing out and looking for a bigger stage. Jim Leavitt at USF would be plum scary at UT, for example. Or you could go the UA route and poach a coach from the NFL.

I like Gruden...don't get me wrong... but I'm not sure that's much of an accomplishment since the Bucs share the division w/ the 'Aints, the Vick-less Falcons, and the Carolina Road Warriors.

Gruden would be great. Anybody with any success in the NFL over a period of time would be a solid choice. Even Stallings was a loser at the pro level, but that kind of experience has to help. I think even Saban's mediocre stint was helpful for him.

Gruden would be a coup.

I think I would prefer an up-and-coming college coach. A pro coach would be ok as long as we got a Pete Carroll and not a Bill Callahan or a Dave Wannstedt.

I know Im going to here it over this but Im still not sure we need to fire Fulmer although Im getting closer. If this does happen I would love to see Leavitt come to town.

Giving Cutcliffe the job would be the same as rehiring Fulmer...did we see Cutcliffe's offense today. His abandonment of the run was inexcusible. As much as I don't like to talk about all this coach crap, we've got to either keep the staff or completely clean house.

Jerry Green has been paid off already, and I thought Buzz had been paid off already.

This article is from March of 2005

Peterson's contract ran through the 2008-09 season with a base salary of $220,000. Incentives and other deals pushed his annual income much higher than that. Under the contract terms, Tennessee owes him a $1.36 million buyout, which must be paid within 30 days. [ UT adds to Peterson's contract ]

The Vols still owe former coach Jerry Green one more payment of $210,000 from his buyout contract.

Peterson fired after four seasons at Tennessee

The problem here is Coach Fulmer and Mike Hamilton are trying to force Vol fans to accept mediocrity and I for one am not wavering. It's time for a change, time to support our Vols even more, the time has come.If Hamilton can't do the job,bye to him as well. Those guys are "Burning down the house"!(that Neyland built)

I think we can all agree that change is forthcoming, the only question is to what degree? will it only be an overhaul of the d staff or a complete house cleaning? it honestly would not suprise me if Fulmer manages to hang on for another year.

what about a guy like Bobby Johnson? He knows the recruiting of the SEC and any guy that can turn around the Vandy program should be good in our book, right??

What about Joe Barry, the DC for the Detroit Lions. He's smart, a motivator, coached linebackers with Bucs for several years, paid his dues. His father in law is Rod Marinelli and his father is Mike Barry, former offensive line coach for UT in 98.
