So I really hope the wilcox guy is a great DC. Question though, do we want him to be lights out good? Here's my thought, if he's Kirby Smart/Bob Stoops good, he's gone in a year, two years max, and we're back to square one installing a new defensive philosophy, etc. If he's pretty good (a la Chavis on 1st and 2nd down), he stays for a long time and we have a consistently good defense. Seems strange though to not want the best DC you can get.

I hope he's gone in 2 years. That means he did a HELL of a job. Success = turnover in coaching, usually.

apply the same question but think about it........4 years with a top 25 defense and he didnt leave boise state to go pro, did he? if hes truly dedicated he will stay with the vols

if he leaves like u predict, CDD will find the one.

I understand what your concerns are...actually some Boise fans posted that Wilcox actually accepted the head coaching job at TN in 2013 as they feel CDD will fail and be fired in 3 years. I say bring the best talent we can get and let the chips fall where they may. I'm tired of trading loyalty for mediocracy to be honest. I'm not too found of one and outs but I don't think that will be the case with Wilcox

That's the problem though. Some times you get it right, sometime you don't. What if he's great and the next guys a lemon. Wouldn't you rather have a consistent top 10 defense with the same coordinator year after year as opposed to a top five defense followed by, say, the 40th ranked defense?

I hope he understands that he is not going against TCU, UTEP,Bowling Green, or Utah State and that he is going against teams like Alabama,Florida, and LSU.

If he can't figure out who he is even playing, this was a bad hire. I think he'll realize.

There are shades of gray between greatest def. coordinator of all time and out of work bum.

The era of having a long term coaching staff is dead.

If one is successful enough to warrant a better job then you promote someone else. This is why assistant coaches are so important.

IMO the elephant in the room with the old staff was if monte could actually defend against the spread. I don't think wilcox will have that problem.

I agree there. Don't think anybody wanted to say it, or anything. But he wasn't just shut down, incredible like his reputation seemed to guarantee he would be.

I dunno enough about Wilcox, i read through his Bio... I like it. Can he recruit? totally different situation, but just wondering.

I'm not stoked with the hire. I am willing to give him a chance, proof is in the pudding.
He is good at stopping the spread, figures now that UF will proably be more of a pro set offense.
As signing day draws to a close, i am looking to spring practice.
Its up to the coaches to coach these guys up.

As a side note, i will be very dissapointed if C. Smith is not hired to be D line coach.

if he ever has above a top 40 defense (on an annual basis) CDD will probably fire him regardless because you cant get far without a good defense... simple as that

No, absolutely not.

You hope he succeeds beyond our wildest expectations. I hope we have to pay him $4M in a couple years as Assistant Head Coach, Coach in waiting, house, car, driver, etc.

You cannot root for mediocrity. We don't even know if he'll even be any good yet.

my point was suppose he's great and in two years leaves to be the head coach at some place. Then we get the next up and comer and he's a bust. I'm just saying, for the sake of continuity (and all the good it brings), it can be better to have really good but not incredibly good assistants because in the long term you'll have a consistently good team.

Did people not learn anything from the past decade about a stale staff that stays together too long because nobody else wants them?
