Assistant Coach Catch 22

Coaching turnover is an unfortunate reality but if he is successful and the program wins we will not have a problem bringing in someone else or just promoting someone that knows the system..I think we'll do fine.

Did people not learn anything from the past decade about a stale staff that stays together too long because nobody else wants them?
but that's not what we had. We had some real stinkers (Sanders) during the bad years. I think if you got stinkers you show them the door. This isn't about firing guys who are bad but retaining guys who are good. I'm just saying I'd rather have really good guys we can keep together as a unit than a revolving cycle of coaching wizzes followed by pretenders.

But that isn't what UT did now was it? Sanders, Washington, Slade, et al weren't coveted by anybody in football other than the Head Hawg.

All good programs turn over coaches. Just look at the past few BCS champs and you will find alot of turnover on the staffs. Those programs just continue to hire more good coaches to take their place. Most "really good coaches" aren't going to turn down promotions and raises just like people in all careers out that big bad world don't do it either.

I agree there. Don't think anybody wanted to say it, or anything. But he wasn't just shut down, incredible like his reputation seemed to guarantee he would be.

I dunno enough about Wilcox, i read through his Bio... I like it. Can he recruit? totally different situation, but just wondering.

He did pretty good at Boise. He will have Tennessee to sell. Kiffin and DD figured out pretty fast they could sell UT and Wilcox will too. Fulmer did in the 90s, but lost his touch before his demise.

You never want to keep a coaching staff that no one else wants. ala Fulmer if he would have surrounded himself with top notch talented coaches he may still be here. I don't think he trusted to many people since the rumor of how he got his job.

Well...seeing that we were paying Monte a previously unheard of 1.5 mill/yr, I'd say we're in pretty good shape to keep him if we are that successful.

But if a good program comes along and wants to promote him to HC, can't blame the guy. In that case, I think Thompson will certainly be ready to step up...and I would have no problem with that.

Well, here we go again with that all important question of any coach. Just have to bring it up again like :horse:

Didn't some ask if "Can CDD recruit" also?

Wouldn't you rather have a consistent top 10 defense with the same coordinator year after year as opposed to a top five defense followed by, say, the 40th ranked defense?

I'm not one to damper every hypothetical that people on these boards throw out there, but how in the world does this discussion have any practical application?

What are you saying Dooley should do, go after a middle of the road DC so we can be average but not great? That goes against everything that a coach stands for.

Anyway, unless there's a Coaches 'R Us that I don't know about where you can special order a top ten as opposed to a top five coach, I don't understand your point.
