Oh I know they are. When I was trying out for band in middle school, you had to play each instrument and you were rated on which ones you did best you got to choose from. Oboe I'm sure was on lowest part as well as french horn which is what I originally wanted to play. I think we only had like 2 oboe players in my class, not a popular instrument, but like you said, when its played right, it can sound nice.
I'm going to be the bragging father, my daughter was in Gov.School, All State Band, and got a full scholarship at Tenn. Tech and a Graduate Assistant position at Ill. State as an oboist/english horn player. She now teaches music in Donners Grove Ill. She is in the Chicago Community Symphony.
Yeah, I did not go to that length, was not my thing, I just did it because my sister and brother did it, quit after a few years. My sister was the one that continued, got all of those things things as well---one of the few times it sucked to be the younger sibling, dragged to columbia and all of these other places for concert after concert, band contest after band contest and when you are in elementary school like the time I was, I just wanted to play...but when she got to play at UT, now that all changed since we got to go to football games.
I wouldn't mind going to see the Chicago Symphony, bet that is nice!
Several of her classmates marched in the UT Band, one played the trumpet solo during the Alma Mater almost every game, Cindy Arnold.
We heard the Chicago Symphony once, excellent, my daughter is in the Community Symphony, not quite the same.
My sister had a blast in the band. One of the attorneys here was also in the UT band, and marched with my sister...small world. But it definitely made for some fun experiences I would have not had otherwise.
I didn't realize there was a difference. Is one more just more formal than the other?[/QUOTE]
The Chicago Symphony consists of relatively well paid musicians who are tops in each instrument. Some arguably the best in the country. Many have been members many years. Most rank them one of top 3 symphonies in the country. The Community ensemble memers are only modestly paid for actual performance and mileage if they play out of town. Many start out in the Community group and move up when there is an opening, but hundreds audition for each spot.
