The oboe and english horn are the most difficult wind instruments to play. But I think they are quite haunting in their beauty of sound, although if not played spot on, they can be hard on the ear. They play much of the melody in symphonic music and many solos, which would lead you to think composers must like their sound.

Oh I know they are. When I was trying out for band in middle school, you had to play each instrument and you were rated on which ones you did best you got to choose from. Oboe I'm sure was on lowest part as well as french horn which is what I originally wanted to play. I think we only had like 2 oboe players in my class, not a popular instrument, but like you said, when its played right, it can sound nice.
