Was growing Italian San Marzanos from seed. Herd O' Cats dumped them over. None survived. So, I'll be shopping for more plants than usual this year. Definitely going to get a couple of Better Boys. They grow well, where I'm at.

Cool. Do you know what kind you're gonna get? I've got 3 Beefsteak and 3 Hybrid Heirloom (ugly). All of the seeds are Beefsteak.

I usually get Goliath. I don't think I've done the beefsteak before. Are they good? We eat tomato sandwiches like they're going extinct!

In one of my more surreal teenage moments, I still remember sitting on a CIA airplane on a Tan Son Nhut taxiway, looking out the airplane window and watching an endless string of ARVN colonels loading crates of stuff into the cargo hold, doubtless assuring their financial futures as "refugees"...

Somewhere around 1970, as best as I can recall.
This is a pretty surreal post. You were in the CIA as a teenager? I am impressed!

To be honest, that's what my dad and grandparents always grew. They're one of the Larger varieties and work good for sammiches and caprese salad, and everything in between, yes, they are really good "mater tasting".

They also grow well, meaning, they don't seem to be as high maintenance like some of the others I've grown.

This is my first time for the ugly tomatoes, but they are my favorite from the grocery store and/or farmers market. I'm actually more excited about them. Can't wait to see how they do (grow, produce and taste).

That sucks, damn cats. Those are my favorite for red sauces.

I think I remember my dad growing them (better boys) before, don't remember much about them, just the name. How many total will you plant? I wish I could have more than what I'll end up with. But then again, a few more than what Ill have and I would need to think about canning. I don't really want to get into that, because then I would want to have way more.........yea, I'm fine with what I've got. Lol.

Was a pretty cool story.

Why the Fawk do we spell "Colonel" that way, or pronounce it the way we do? Curnell works for me. Haha.

Given the new space allotted for veggie garden and the missus request for sweet peppers, herbs, and bush beans, likely I'll plant six maters (various types), eight if my planning works.

You're corny.

I like corn tho. :)

Tin Man got in my way. This was for the squirrel.

Post us pictures when you get them grown!

Nada. Just prepped ground. Peppers should go in this weekend. Everything else end of March - mid-April. Watching average temps.

Where are you? I don't remember.

I forget that its not planting time for everyone. I'm lucky in that regard.

lol

No, I was an Army brat flying space-A with my family around Asia.

The truly worst flight was on an Air Force cargo plane full of empty coffins. Heading east, not home.

Another FYI tifwiw.

I don't eat breakfast often, but it's a beautiful cool morning(58) and I felt like having some eggs. I like them "runny" over easy to be exact. Egg yolks need something to play against like salty meat, hot sauce, crisp fried taters or buttered toast. It may not sound welcomed early in the morning like butter or maple and I know people are stubborn about thier eggs, but a measured shot of vinegar is surprisingly perfect.

Splash about two tablespoons in your hot, still buttery pan as soon as the eggs come out of it and let it reduce by half, then pour the resulting syrup over your eggs. Boom! As you take that first bite, the brightness will startle you, then feel strangely comforting and familiar.

Or don't, just keep eating them the the same old way. :)

If you like hot sauce or ketchup on your eggs just remember they both have vinegar in them.

My wife is frying bacon, and eggs right now. I get her to fry mine in the bacon grease, mmmmmmm.

Good news, I now have 3 small tomatoes.

Bad news, 2 of my plants have a little white mold on some leaves. Just googled it. It's caused by high humidity. First recommendation seems simple, just don't water for a day or two and when I do, keep it off the leaves. I'm going a step further, just pinched off the leaves that had the mold. Haha, can't see it mattering one way or the other but, it's done.
