Personally I think CBJ mentioned the two QB system to prevent a potential transfer. Hoping QD comes out against GA TECH and has an excellent game. Need stability at the QB position.

IIRC, it was really only a 2 QB system for that first game against UNLV. Ainge got the job after that and never looked back (well, until he was benched in 2005 because he was so bad).

If JG wins the job out of Fall camp, Dormady transfers imo. He has two years eligibility and a redshirt to burn for a transfer. JG has four seasons and isn't far behind if at all. He would most likely stay available and compete to win the job. Transferring loses him a season and by the time he starts at another school he would have been starting here anyway...so no benefit.

I personally don't like a 2 QB system unless 1 QB prepares, starts and stays in the game after it starts. That is barring injury or is completely ineffective.

Dormady is a junior while Guarantano is a RS freshman. I can see Dormady starting, and Guarantano coming in on special packages for the next two seasons. I had never been a big fan of 2 QB systems, but it worked for Florida when they had Tebow. I hate using Florida as an example, but it is the one example I have seen where 2 QBs were better than one.

If Dormady continues to be the more accurate passer as he seemed during the spring, I believe he opens up as the starter. Who gets how many snaps just has to work itself out. But if your other ten guys work equally well for both? That makes a 2 QB system harder to scheme against.

If it results in more wins? It might be fun. And this was, IMO, very thread worthy.

Edit: Just noticed after posting and had to ask; Is one of our two QBs left handed? I thought both were right handed.

I don't believe Butch said this for any reason what so ever. Truth is given UT's recent history QD may, in fact, come out and have a poor game due to freshmen at the DT/pass rusher position and due to getting everyone on the same page... then JG comes in and wins the game for us... then, JG progressively showing mistakes as the next couple of games everyone else gets into a rhythm. Then we go back to QD and he wins the season for us and comes out looking like a hero. That kind of scenario is totally plausible so don't be surprised.

Plausible, but not preferable. That is not a two QB system, that is a QB controversy. And while we have seen a two QB system win titles a few times, the QB controversy usually leads to five or six losses. I would prefer to be surprised.

In a two QB system they would rotate by default so coaching decisions are a non-factor in this scenario. That is why it is called a two QB system

My comment was about Vol fans affecting a college kid's confidence in a two QB system

The 2-QB systems I've seen work best are those with clear roles for the QBs. Like one's a wildcat who can also throw well enough to keep the LBs and CBs honest, while the other is the every-down pocket presence. Or one is a triple-option captain while the other is the leader of the zone read or pro-set packages.

This way, there's no competition between them, it's more a cooperate-and-succeed kind of feeling.

If we do go 2-QB, here's hoping the staff come up with a scheme that makes sense to the players in a collaborative way.

He has been the best thus far, and there is NO reason to believe that he won't continue to shine in the fall.

If the defense goes in thinking QD won't run then when the time is right he could make a long one to change the game or JG could throw the pass that breaks a game wide open.

Once every body sees both can run and pass, they will understand why we are running a 2 QB system(If we are good enough.).
