I know this isnt what this board is for, but i was just wondering if there are an Army Ex-Army etc. guys round here. Im 18 and I am probably about to enlist as an 11B with Airborne and the 40x option to attend Ranger School and RIP. I would welcome any advice or words of wisdom. Oh and if anyone has any negative comments about my choice, no offence but screw you, its my life not yours, and someone has to do it, might as well be me.

Good luck. I was 11H. It's a rude awakening for many. Some crash and some serve the full term to retirement. If anything, I tell people that if they are short timers make sure you choose an MOS that will transfer to something in the civilian world you like as well. That is one of the biggest issues in transitioning to civilian world. Enjoy the trip to Benning. Time it where you aren't there for basic in the summer if you hate hot and humid to the extreme...

I was planning on goin into DEP and shipping late this summer or in early fall so i could have more time to train. I would rather do it in heat than in cold tho i heard it was humid as hell tho.

As a former 11B, currently 11A, I commend you on your decision. Definitely take the RIP and Ranger option. With the current op-tempo, Ranger slots are being pulled away from guys that are already in units due to mobilization (this has now happened to me twice.)

I wouldn't want to be on Sand Hill in the summer! Good point earlier in the thread though if you are just enlisting for a few years get a good transition MOS. I would recommend something with a clearance much much easier to get a job in the civilian sector, trust me

I was an active duty 19D, loved the job, and the pomp associated with being in a Cavalry unit. although i found Korea to be the ******* of the earth. Overall a good time, a great life experience for a young buck with a troublesome streak, like i was at the time. Good luck with your Army career. OSUT (i think the infantry has it for basic, i know cav/armor does) is going to suck, just keep in mind that no matter how squared away you are, you're going to get your ass chewed for something, it's all part of the game. God Speed.

Cav Scout is what led me to start researching the Special Forces and Rangers. Always thought it looked pretty interesting too.

Start running, doing push ups, pull ups, and sit ups. Get ahead of the game. More PT Drill Sergeant!

How solid is that RIP / Ranger thing? If you fully believe that's the course you'll get, I'd run with it, but I would make absolutely sure that I wasn't being sold something.

Nothing like a tabbed SP4 (P).

If you can afford it get some boots and walk great distances in them. Get a backpack and load it down with books as well. It's been over a decade since I've been on Sand Hill but each starship was a different speed as far as intensity. Some were more laid back than others on things such as phone calls, drinking sodas, weekend passes, etc. So be prepared for any extreme.
