Are we any better?

Kyle Phillips and Tuttle impressed me on the defense. Phillips showed great hustle, and Tuttle was as disruptive as always. Baylen Buchanan on the other hand:(

Where on earth did anyone on the DL do anything to be impressive? They had like two good plays the whole game.

This staff isn't going half way with implementing philosophical changes on both sides of the ball. There was definitely some indecision by our guys yesterday with not understanding their assignments. They're learning new schemes and it's going to be some rough going. They really need to make good use of these next two weeks.

Sometimes you have to destroy the problems and take Them down to ground zero before you rebuild....

Kinda like reformatting a hard drive or hitting the reset button.

yesterday was like the system either has not rebooted or is in the process of resetting.....

This Staff will get there with time because they have standards and will hold players accountable and accept responsibility for their actions.

Yep...nothing real intricate on either side of the ball. I really believe we have some young talent on defense(didn’t look that way mostly) but the lack of a pass rush, and I mean ZERO pressure, exposes the backend on any defense, especially with the quality of QB, WR, and OL they had...

I wasn’t a believer until yesterday, but WV’s offense is as good as ANYBODYS in the country...

IMO.....we are not better. But I feel the potential is there.

QB was better, OLine was better, DL was better, LB was better.
Pass rush was worse
DBs were worse

Play calling was mixed on both sides
Running games mixed

Coaching was better
Post game after a bad loss was light years better

They lost all to momentum after an hour and a half rain delay and had a terrible 3rd quarter

The team had to play man coverage because nobody knew their assignments in zone. If you watch the tape we have guys running out of their areas instead of passing guys off.

And we blitzed but we can’t win one on ones when we get them. The guys just can’t get off block. And they did a **** job of disguising the blitzes. Grier just took his time. Saw what was coming and made the throws after that.

I think we'll be fine after some needed talent upgrade over the next couple of years. Until then, we need to chill and appreciate that at least we have a solid baseball, lady vols, and men's basketball program to cheer on!

Ya, it didn’t go the way I thought it would at all. There defense even dominated us. I just think we will improve throughout the year, I still think Pruitt is the answer. I guess I was wrong about WV being overrated and I’m sure I’ll have to eat my words for it. Smdh

If you guys really think that this team hasn’t improved from last year then your delusional. Pruitt saved us from another 20 points bc of his audibles last years team the game would have been over by the 1st quarter

We definitely made their defense look better than it really is. WV will probably finish 8-4, maybe 9-3.

I’d say no. Still tackled like crap. Cant anticipate in the secondary and the offensive line is horrible. We’re slow and bring no intensity to the field.

Maybe we’ll be better someday, but this team looked way too much like the team Butch rolled outed last year.
Please tell me what you expected in year one? The Roster is awful, can’t teach old dogs new tricks

Agree with you up until “7-5 is very attainable this year....and I will be ecstatic if we finish 8-4.”
Don’t believe we have enough talent on D overall, and the young fr with lots of potential won’t get us there this year. 6-6 would be very good, 5-7 more realistic IMO.
Whatever the record ends up at this year, even if it’s 4-8 we would be in a greater position to make some real strides and expect 8-4 or better the next year with an experienced QB and maturity from this years promising FR.

Well...I said 7-5 is attainable because it allows for us losing 4 more games this year....IMO...UGA, AUB, BAMA, + 1 more....which means that I believe we go 4-4 in the SEC... Fla, USCe, KY, Mizzou, and Vandy....

I would be ecstatic if we won all of those games...meaning we would finish 8-4....

I do believe 7-5 is completely achievable...I just don't CJP and crew will allow us to fold under like CBJ and crew did last year....

JG and Tim Jordan did look good, but we had the ball on offense for 33 minutes, and only managed to score 14 points against, in terms of our schedule, a middling defense at best.

O-line sabotaged everything the offense tried to do. I wasn't expecting a great offensive line but I was expecting it to be at least serviceable. It looked like we still had walk ons playing. I for one don't complain about defense because we were warned all off season that our weakness was running into their strength.

By the way, that 17 play drive was a thing of beauty to me. Its why the game was close at halftime.

We're not better as a whole. Some players are pretty good and did an okay job. Young secondary showed, continued problems with talent showed on the O Line and D Line. Still not anywhere close to winning battles in the trenches.

Having played a little ball on the Dl.I can tell you we wont win many battles in the trenches until our kids have a couple of years in a quality sc program. We have one now but are years behind most teams we will play. Its a shame but its true

With the exception of the first few drives, I thought they play decent. By the time halftime arrived, they had slowed WV offense down. The long halftime delay seemed to make them flat like they were at the beginning of the game. I had big expectations from the VOLs like a lot of others but I think they will improve during the year. I also think I under estimated WV as well.

Secondary is lost. Poor fundamentals, even after a lot of intensive coaching this year. Not a good sign moving forward.

For example... our young DB did not turn his body or head or raise an arm to increase his chances of defending against a pass (a few times). That just makes no sense at this juncture. If technique has been coached up in this area, and you have run stride for stride with the guy for 4 seconds at full speed, you should know its a hot route and the ball is coming your way. So, help yourself out man, and get involved in the last 500 msec of the play.

Otherwise it seems like your are praying the ball is over-under thrown or bounces off your helmet. And those scenarios were not in your favor yesterday.
