Are we any better?

I don't really believe that WVU is the best passing team that we will see all year. The passing teams we see will also be
excellent running teams. Our pass defense is hoping the receiver trips and falls down. Our run defense is hoping the rbs are under 100 pounds and run about a 7.0 40.

Then you don't know jack.....No one in the SEC throws the ball as well as Grier, the 5th year SR. and 1st round draft choice....

Jarrett Stidham and Tua are pretty good. Today gives us a pretty good indicator of how we'll fare against both of those teams (Auburn and Bama).

I’d say no. Still tackled like crap. Cant anticipate in the secondary and the offensive line is horrible. We’re slow and bring no intensity to the field.

Maybe we’ll be better someday, but this team looked way too much like the team Butch rolled outed last year.

My question would be, do the people who schedule the games talk to the people who play the games? This team needed 3 easy games to get rolling. Don't care how far back they scheduled the game, word should have been out. Non-conference games must be automatic wins.

If we play like this all season Vols aren't winning any games.

Expected growing pains did happen today, and the team didn't play effectively together except I'm still optimistic that this Vols team that would not quit can learn from the growing pain miserable games and play better including vs pretty good or great teams.

Similar to the 2016 Titans they will have the common growing pains with the new system with a New Head Coach, and this team is capable of playing better which no doubt happens on the field.
The QB proved valiant and tough and was able to lead the Vols down field, also finding the holes for running the ball after the contained 1st half.

yes, and no.

the first 10 minutes of the game, that looked like a 4-8 team. the 2nd qtr, we looked like we could play. the 3rd, that wasn't good. effort in the 4th was good, even though the game was pretty much out of reach.

they'll get better.

how much? dunno. and i'm not gonna blame this all on 'the match up', difficult as it proved out to be, because we did miss tackles, we didn't tackle great in space, we didn't get a ton of push wiht the O line.

if i had to pick positives to build on, there were moments int eh game where our DL got great push and collapsed the pocket on Grier, or got contact behind the line of scimmage on a ball carrier. additionally, i thought MC had a very good game. i think Tim Jordan has a good game all in all. and while i think JG still has things to work on, i don't think he hurt himself today. he looked mostly poised, delivered the ball, and seemed to have command of the offense. he still isn't great at pre snap reads and recongizing bliztes, and he tends to stare down the WR. we'll see how much that improves as the year goes on.

we do, though, have a ways to go.....

Not that we are a contender this year, but in the era of the CFB playoff, OOC oppoenents matter. Especially if you are in a conference or division of a conference that is perceived to be weak.

I think that the offense as a whole looked better minus the first two possessions and more importantly we had zero turnovers. Defensively the d line didn't have a lot of push and when they got to grier they could not sack him. The secondary will get better as the season progresses

Thought we had a defensive genius. Nothing, not anything, on that side improved.
He's a defensive genius not a miracle worker, some on here expect him to turn EVERYTHING around in year 1, yeah I thought the d would play alittle better but we have to accept that these players just don't have the fight and are a bit lazy. Secondary is garbage, Taylor and Thompson have an excuse it was their first game, but Abernathy gets beat every play. Warrior missed a ton of tackles and was out of position ALOT. Linebackers are slow and have a hard time covering anybody and also can't put pressure on the QB. So what exactly can Pruitt do with that

I'm not going to lie; it is slightly unsettling that our offense didn't score more points against a middling Big 12 D that gave up over 500 yards to Kansas last season.

UGA and Bama play a weak schedule and they were both in the championship game. Win the SEC and you are getting in regardless of NC opponents. Since Dooley arrived the WORD should have been "schedule easy teams until we get back our mojo".

Harsh reality for us. We are a 5/6 win team. We just folded to a big 12 team on offense. The SEC will be much better as a whole on defense. We don’t have the jimmys and jos to compete on a top level. Expectations should be beat UF and Vandy and maybe we get a break and beat UF, Mizzou, Sc. We are dreadfully slow on defense. Expect more of the same over the top this season
You figure that you are better or that UF is worse?

Alabama opened last season with Florida State, and their only loss was to Auburn, who went to the SEC championship. Georgia beat Notre Dame in their opener and avenged their only regular season loss by demolishing Auburn in the SEC championship.

Not sure what you are getting at?

good point. just lacked big play ability and couldn't push the ball down the field. that drive int eh 2nd quarter was a beautiful thing. but we needed it 10 minutes earlier.

to go along with the turnovers, iirc, i think we played a relatively clean game penalty wise as well. we had a few that were uncalled for, sure, but all things considered for a 1st year coach, with new schemes etc...i don't think penalties were an absolute killer.

those two things are at least signs of a team that won't necessarily beat itself w/mistakes.

Oh, and furthermore:

Delaware State last season - 301 yards of offense
Tennessee - 301 yards of offense

People keep saying our offense is improved. I'm not so sure.

because it's looking like a 5-7 team
Well if it's 5-7 then it's 5-7 can't do anything about it, we just don't have the horses to compete right now plain and simple. But this revolving door at head coach has to stop, if we lose some people start the I'm done, he's not the guy etc. It's never going to get any better if we keep doing that. I'm not saying be satisfied with losing but how is ANYBODY going to build something if after 2 or 3 years (or in some cases on here 1 game) we rinse and repeat.

WVU's defense last year, was uncharacteristically bad in comparison to previous years.

As of now I'd say no
Horrible D
Bad kicking game and special teams
Horrible D line
Mediocre O line
Not enough players on field on play

Aside from the second quarter we were bad. I’m significantly tempering my expectations for this year. I do like CPJ and will give him 4 years to get us going. I’m 62 now and hope I don’t run out of time.

We took an ass kicking today. We are going to have some growing pains under Pruitt. There is a huge difference between the type of football we played previously versus what we want to play. It will take time. Im unhappy but somewhat patient at this point.
