Are Dobbs' Mechanical Issues Fixable? - Article

Dobbs has better intangibles than Cam. I never said Josh was the most naturally gifted QB ever. I will however say nobody has better intangibles. Whether it's work ethic or competitiveness, Dobbs is unmatched in that regard.

It'll be his elite intangibles paired with great natural ability that will make him all-time great in the NFL.

no disagreement on the intangibles.

but what is tangible...NFL defenses. if he doesn't develop as a pocket qb 1st, he'll be working on jet engines a lot sooner than you think.

the legs are great, and as his predecessor has shown in Pittsburgh, being big, strong and mobile can help buy time and make plays. but also as his predecessor has found out, even the biggest, strongest of the bunch weare down after a while.

as we've seen with Cam, we've seen it with Ben, NFL defenses take their toll. they take their toll a lot faster on those that can't manage the pocket effectively. that's what has enabled Ben to have the career he's had, and will be the reason Cam continues, and hopefully will stay relatively healthy in the process.

. dbl post.

One could make all kinds of arguments for Dobb's work ethic, given his academic pursuits. However, he wasn't the most competitive guy on his own team, so to declare that he's "unmatched" is nonsense.

Yes he was. Jalen Reeves-Maybin was quoted as saying he's never been around anyone as competitive as Josh.

Dobbs is driven like nobody else. Now that all he has to do is focus on football he will raise his game to a level we haven't seen.

Getting on with an organization as consistently good as the Steelers with the supporting cast he now has gives him a good shot.

Dobbs should win multiple superbowls in Pittsburgh. And if you win multiple superbowls as a QB you place yourself in the GOAT discussion.

I compared him to Michael Jordan moreso for the fact that Josh will also bring unprecedented excitement to the game. Michael Jordan was not only the best basketball player ever. But he was also the most exciting. Dobbs style of play with his scrambling and elusiveness is incredibly exciting. And it will excite fans in the same way Jordan's high flying playing style excited fans in the late 80s.
Should win multiple Superbowls? The kid has yet to take a snap at the NFL level and you are already putting him up there with Tom Brady. You wonder why noone takes you seriously and looks at you like a crazy, senile grandmother.

i do think he was more competitive than he maybe led on. he wasn't firey like a baker mayfield or anything, but i don't have any doubts that a guy that made some of the runs he made, wasn't a big time competitor.

whether he was the biggest on the team, who cares. subjective, and no way to 'know' one way or the other.

To say he's unmatched in work ethic and competitiveness is such a subjective, non-provable statement....Yes, Josh has great intangibles but none of them will much matter if he can't be efficient and beat NFL teams/defenses from the pocket.

Also, since when have you not claimed that Josh is the most naturally gifted QB ever?? Dear GOD, that's pretty much all you ever say/argue/imply.

One teammate's statement does not a case make. But again, it's nonsense. For one, Derek Barnett is notably more competitive that Dobbs. Want an example? Watch the Bama game. The circumstances left UT with almost no chance to make that a game, but Barnett was out there giving every ounce he had. UT's only plays came as a result of Barnett's drive. Dobbs was done in the first few minutes of the third. UT had no chance of winning. But if Dobbs had been competing like Barnett, UT doesn't get humiliated in their own house.

lol. kinda hard to be competitive when you're peeling J allen and T williams off your chest seemingly every other play. of the two, between Barnett and Dobbs, i think it's safe to say Dobbs had the tougher match up...

and it's no more an indication of what kind of competitor he is as D4h's 2nd hand quote from a teammate.

No doubt, Dobbs was in a terrible spot. But watch his body language. Watch how his audibles become fewer and farther between. Watch how he doesn't even look downfield. Watch how he stops scrambling.

Again, that is not to put the loss on Dobbs' shoulders, or to pretend like things would have turned out much differently. I don't know that losing by 4 scores would have been much better than losing by 6. But the point is that Barnett was busting his ass on every play even when the game was out of reach. There came a point when Dobbs simply didn't want any more.

eh, i tend to lean toward Dobbs' demeanor didn't change much regardless of how they were doing. aside from a fist pump or the something of the like on a big play every now and then....he pretty much looked the same, regardless.

i think in that Bama game, the whole team kinda got to the point of feeling 'defeated'.

agree though on Barnett. his motor really never stops.

Intangibles stop where Von Miller's helmet starts. You can ask Cam about that.

Intangible meet tangible.

Just watched this Randall Cunningham documentary on NFL Network: https://youtu.be/5kxJumA6xv8

Just watch the highlights in the beginning. Its eerie how similar he is to Dobbs. Almost the exact same body type. Similar throwing motion and running style as well.

I was too young to have seen Randall when he was young but from watching this documentary, it seems as though the biggest reason Cunningham didn't reach his full potential in Philly was because he was more interested in being a celebrity than being a great football player. The offensive talent around him in Philly wasn't that great either and the coaching staff wasn't very good offensively. Like Dobbs at Tennessee, Randall on the Eagles was carrying that entire offense on his back. We finally got to see his full potential in Minnesota at age 35 after he matured personally and was surrounded by elite talent on offense. I imagine if he was more mature early on and had better offensive talent around him, he would have been a first ballot Hall of Famer and won several super bowls. The guy was a one of a kind talent.

Josh Dobbs IMO has all of Randall Cunningham's natural ability and none of his personality flaws. He's not interested in being a celebrity. He's interested in being a great football player. He's also surrounded by elite offense talent in Pittsburgh and won't be asked to carry the team on his back.

After seeing this documentary on Randall Cunningham, I'm even more confident about Dobbs potential in the NFL. I expect Josh to be like 1998 Randall Cunningham for a majority of his career. He will be a perenial MVP candidate and go down as one of the greatest players in NFL history.

The similarity between the two is uncanny. You can't watch those Cunningham highlights at the start and as a Vols fan not see Josh doing the same things.

He's already looked like Randall Cunningham in college with his incredible scrambling ability and deep ball accuracy.

Like Randall he's incredibly elusive and can throw the deep ball like nobody else.

There's absolutely nothing similar about them, from throwing motion to running style. Of course, you already know this to be true.

Your posts are hilarious and it seems you've achieved your goal of getting under some skin here.

Randall Cunningham played in a different game than what Dobbs will see. Defenses are 25 lbs or more heavier and two steps faster.

They are nothing alike other than skin color and height/weight. They throw completely different and Randall was on a whole new level as far as athleticism. Also, why used his 1988 year, which wasn't his best?

Exactly. Dobbs is not half the quarterback Cunningham is.
