Hey guys recently I've tried my hand a few times at making apple pie moonshine at home (using grain alcohol, not shine) with varying results. I've met a few people in my short life that have had mason jars of awesome apple goodness and I really want to make some for myself. I've looked online but there's so many variations, most of which seem pretty weak to me (10-15% alcohol). I thought what better place to get a discussion going than a TENNESSEE forum :) Can anyone offer any advice or have any recipes they'd like to share?

I've done a little reading about infusing the alcohol for 2-4 weeks in a mason jar with apple slices before making your mix and combining it all. Has anyone had any personal success with this? I've also heard about the use of honey instead of sugar, and even a little vanilla extract.

I've got a really nice juicer, because cider is seasonal and it would probably be better anyways, I'm thinking for the next batch I make I will use homemade juiced apples for my cider portion of the batch.

The way a friend of mine takes a 1/2 jar of shine, and cuts it with with apple cider and a cinnamon stick. It's very good but too sweet for me. Also can't put it in freezer.

I take 2 of his pure shine and 1 apple then cut it myself. You can at least put it in the freezer without freezing.

Thanks for the advice smart guy. Did you read my thread or just the title? Because I very clearly stated I use grain alcohol not shine. You know, the stuff you legally purchase at the liquor store :p

I know you are using grain alcohol OP, so this is not intended to you.

People that buy "apple pie" moonshine, are getting ripped off. That is a diluted, watered down cousin of real moonshine.

The seller is making a ridiculous amount of cash for this watered down bartles & James version of shine.

This is true, but it's soooo good lol. Besides I'm a cheap*** so I don't pay much anyway

I've tried making this with golden grain and moonshine. The better results were with moonshine, IMO. I always go with 1 gallon of shine, 1 gallon of apple juice and 1 gallon apple cider. The amount of cinnamon sticks and sugar can be altered to whatever you prefer. I've also found out that using brown sugar and regular sugar helps with flavor. Just prepare for a long night, if you plan on drinking much of it.

This is close to what my family makes for the holidays. We just call it Apple Pie. We consider it more of a punch then an actual shine. You can make it as strong as you want. I make big batches for Christmas and give out quart jars at work each year.

You can drink it cold out of the fridge. It goes down like a cold YoHoo drink. You will drink it faster then you planned if not careful. Smells and taste just like grannie's apple pie.

My wife likes to put it in a big crockpot for parties. Makes the whole house smell like pie.

Here is the recipe and steps to make a 4gal run @ 50% moonshine.

You will need the following:

Quart Mason Jars - 16
Apple Cider - 1gal
Apple Juice -1gal
Cinnamon sticks - 6 sticks
Cheese cloth - 1 piece 12"x12"
Brown Sugar - 1 cup
Clear moonshine - 2gal
Large cooking pot - 2+ gal pot

1. put the apple juice and apple cider in the pot and heat it til it is almost to a rolling boil.
2. wrap and tie the cinnamon sticks in a piece of cheese cloth and drop it in the pot.
3. add the cup of brown suger.
4. bring the pot to a rolling boil for a couple of minutes stirring the pot then lower the heat to about medium for another 5-minutes.
5. Shut off the stove to let the mixture cool so you can handle the pot.
6. While your waiting on it to cool a bit, place you cleaned mason jars on the counter and fill them 1/2 way up with shine.
7. Grab a funnel or cut the bottom off a 2-litter drink bottle using it as a tall funnel
8. Once cooled enough to handle the pot, fish out the cinnamon stick pouch. Then stir it real good and pour the mixture in each mason jar to about 1/2 inch from the top.
9. Cap the jars and let them cool a bit more. Once cooled enough store them in the fridge. (not the freezer.. the proof is not high enough and they will bust).

I make about 12gals in a run a couple of times between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. You can make it weaker or stronger depending on who is getting it. I guess you could use some sort of taxed liquor if you are unable to get any good corn. But you are on your own as I can't stand by this recipe using liquor of unknown quality / origin.

Oh, keep it in a cooler if you are moving it. It will keep for about 3-months if kept cool. Give the jar a good shake before serving.

Hope this helps the folks that were asking...
