Appalachain State - Message Boards

What App fan on this board thinks this is going to be close? What i read was a couple App fans saying they had a good team and would give it all they had. It's this insecure fan base that keeps screaming about a blowout. But I guess since Tennessee has been waiting "until next year" for forever, I would be sensitive as well.

Some of us have been around more than long enough to have seen "next year"....

Nothing really insecure about it. We're discussing football with the normal banter you would find here regardless of whether the team is successful or not. If you are too "insecure" to handle this kind of jousting.... then that's on you.

Not sure an "insecure" fan base would still have this much energy and activity after what we've been through collectively.

Bottom line is that a couple of ASU fans came in talking smack.... which most of us welcome as good clean fun. We talked back. You.... stuck your nose in for no good reason other than I guess to prove how "superior" you are.

Thanks for the respect for App's program. We have come a long way from being a tiny school with a decent tiny school program to being a mid-major school with a decent mid-major program. It's been fun to be part of that journey. Although I know some of our fans have seen the move to FBS as the equivalent of moving from small school to large school, I do not share that same opinion. We've still got miles to go.

Personally, I will usually visit opposing team message boards to learn more about the teams App is going to play. It's much more fun (for me anyway) to watch a game when I have a better sense beforehand of what others perceive as the strengths and weaknesses of their own team.

Vegas is about making money. They set the lines at whatever break point they think will bring in the most betting dollars. I've never taken any stock in Vegas lines. That said, there's no way that a pre-season Top 10 Tennessee should be anything other than a heavy favorite to win this game.

See y'all in Knoxville. Only 8 days until our beloved football returns!

Good post. I visit opposing teams sites the week before games too. I don't sign in on those sites (not that I have a problem with that, it's just not my thing), I just go to them to read. I've already been to the App State forum (the one you posted) and have read through several threads.

As for your program. Who knows how far it will go? As it stands right now, I'd say you, as fans, have a lot to be proud of. While still small, as compared to P5 schools, it has a whole lot going for it. Great school, great facilities, great program, great coaches (have always been a huge Dale Jones fan) and for the most part, a great fan base.

Dale Jones is one of the good guys for sure. I've enjoyed getting to know him. My interest in Tennessee can be attributed to him and to a handful of friends who are avid UT fans.

I'm excited to get to see a game in Neyland and am thankful we'll have enough time before the game to wander around UT a bit. We have a friend's child who is a freshman in UT's band this year. I'm hoping that's not the highlight of the game for me. :)

Another Appy State fan addressed the board with some humility, however, he said Tennessee would "likely beat" Appy State and that the Tennessee players need some extra time in the whirlpool on Friday. He caught me having a tough day and I fired back a little bit. I later backed up and mea culpa'd after he responded appropriately and with a little humor to my post.

Here's the bottom line Seattle. You're badly mistaking "insecurity" for a whole lot of confidence.

When Florida or Bama fans come on VN I gotta sit here and take it, I got nothing to say, no leg to stand on....there's plenty of insecurity here about losing 20 games in a row to those two programs. But I'm not gonna take anything off an Appy State fan talking anything remotely close to smack, especially after hearing crap from Utah State, Bowling Green and Vanderbilt fans in recent years....and especially on a fan message board developed and designed specially for Tennessee Volunteer fans.

Gotta love it when a fan of another teams comes on our boards, starts talking trash, doesn't get a warm reception because of it, and then puts us down because of it.

Sounds similar to the Northwestern boards last year. I think they're still calling us rude due to our self confidence. They just say it now with a bit more vitriol, considering the blow-out they experienced on the field..

Don't forget Iowa and Northwestern.

Iowa vs. Tennessee - Box Score - January 2, 2015 - ESPN

Outback Bowl: Tennessee Volunteers 45, Northwestern Wildcats 6 - SEC Blog- ESPN

Forgive us if we've been through this a time or two over the past couple of years.

And as much respect as we have for App St (truly), Iowa and NU, they aren't.

Thanks for the additions, had forgotten those two although I don't know how I did. Could probably even go back to 2013 and throw in Western Ky for good measure.

2015 - Blown out by Clemson 41- 10
2014 - Blown out by Michigan 52-14
2013 - Blown out by Georgia 45-6
2012 - Blown out by E. Carolina - 35-13
2011 - Blown out by Virginia Tech - 66-13
2010 - Blown out by Florida - 48 -10
No power 5 team scheduled in 2009
2008 - Blown out by LSU - 48-10
2007 - Beat Michigan 34-32

47.8 - 12.2

since Michigan

They never scored more than 14 and never gave up less than 35

Scary...

...If their Oline is as good as predicted and stays healthy (not much depth) then they could present a challenge for better than decent teams...

AP St's starting o'line is as follows:

LT 50 Nunn, Beau JR (started RT last yr)
LG 75 Collins, Parker SR (started LG last yr)
OC 52 Edge-Campbell SO (new starter)
RG 66 Collmar, Jamie SR (new starter)
RT 70 Gossett, Colby JR (started LG last yr)

In the Clemson game, Nunn played really well against Kevin Dodd (who finished the season with 12.5 sacks)
Nunn is athletic and appears to be able to contain the perimeter.

The RT (Gossett) is untested as a tackle, but AP St will use the TE (85) to assist the tackles in protecting the edge.

I believe the key is to edge-pressure Gossett (to get him out wide), and then use our tackles and MLB to attack the new guys in the middle.

Eh doubt that. Them and Vandy could be close. Their offense is probably better than Vandys but Vandys D would most likely give them issues.

I'd say with the way South Carolina played last yr losing to The Citadel and Kentucky not being able to put away EKU until the very last second might make App State a possible loss

Completely understandable. Between ESPN,Utah State fans and self hating VN posters, preparing us for that defeat, that annihilation was epic! This is a scheduled EXECUTION! We need to embrace it!

I distinctly remember going off on Colin Cowherd after he said Tennessee would be lucky as hell to beat Utah State. Also remember ESPNU guys picking Western Kentucky to pull off the "upset" and one of them said, "would it really be an upset?" The media also said Bowling Green would make the game a nailbiter. Media keeps picking mid-majors to beat Tennessee and it's why I think this game gets really ugly fast

So who are you a fan of?

41-16

I like App St, have quite a few friends as well as a coworker that went there. I also really like visiting Boone. Their fans are great too, much better than the Tarheels, Blue Devils, CU Tigers, et al that I'm used to around here. App St and ECU are the only Carolina schools I can root for...oh and Coastal Carolina in the CWS was pretty cool.

Good luck on the remainder of your season Mountaineers, and I hope you enjoy your time in Knoxville. GBO!
