Appalachain State - Message Boards

Hope you enjoy Knoxville. It's a great place to see a game, and of course Neyland is a special place every college football fan should experience.

Also hope you understand I was complimenting Appy State fans, not saying it's unreasonable to expect to win every game. I am by nature an overly competitive person, sometimes driving my wife crazy, and I expect to win all the time, or I'm learning what I can do next time to win if I don't. You should ALWAYS want to win.

Again, enjoy Ktown!

No offense taken at all. Reality is reality. Some folks have a hard time with that. I tend to compete a little too much myself from time to time, too.

Having lived in western NC for over 50 years, I've ended up with quite a few friends who are UT fans. I hope y'all have a great season (other than when you play App). :)

Unlike Miami, at least they have a stadium on campus. Miami has to get on busses and drive 30 minutes from Coral Gables to north Miami Dade

Yep. Downside is that with the terrain issues in the mountains our stadium also houses our track facilities. (ugh!) If only we could find several million dollars extra and a little relatively flat land ...

Easier said than done haha. Even with the track, the stadium area looks pretty beautiful. Especially compared to a decade or so ago.

Ask our AD to put you on the schedule a few more times and you'll have plenty of $$$ lol.

App alum here.... I know, I know, it isn't 2007 and you guys aren't Michigan. However, I will say this. We are just now getting up to 85 schollies and are only in year 3 of making the transition to FBS football.
We have a very solid qb in Taylor Lamb (31 td's vs 9 int's last year) and a strong stable of running backs led by Marcus Cox (ran for 1400 yards last season as a jr). What we are really excited about is our stingy defense. Love Coach Jones even if he is a UT alum. Yes, you will likely beat App on September 1. However, you will know that you have played a lunch pail mentality team and may want to spend a little extra time in the whirlpool on Friday.:)

Then just think about how your guys are going to feel after our D-line is done with your 2* QB and RB's. They will be walking real funny after the game.:)

This one was surprisingly active:

Appalachian Football - Mountaineer Message Board

Most App St. fans seem to understand a win against UT is not very likely. However, a few are more optimistic:

"Honestly!!! You really think that Tennessee is the Clemson of last year. They will not win the SEC east.
3 losses on their schedule: Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. All every in the year. Also, At Texas A&M.
I think tennessee is overrated. If App does find a way to win, then Tennessee will be lucky to make a bowl game.
Just saying."

Another decent forum:

The Rock - AppStateMania.com Forums - Scout

For whatever reason, a uga fan made his way onto the forum and started a thread specifically for the UT-App St. game.

A snippet:

"Hopefully you guys can get some turnovers as Dobbs doesn't always make the best decisions.
Best of luck though. Seeing you guys beat UTk and the dejection on that overhyped fan base would more than make my day."

So, with a fan-base full of decent mountain folks, here is ONE panicky whistling in the dark App State fan kid feebly trying to talk trash, and one butt-hurt Dawg fan. :zeitung_lesen:

We should be spending our time making threads worth discussing... We need to be talking about that Ohio squad and if we would struggle with them.

Miami was desperate to fill their 2016 schedule at the last minute, and our AD convinced them they needed a home and home with us. :good!:

Their fans have loved commenting on our "high school" stadium. Of course, I'd rather play before a full 25,000 stadium than mostly empty 77,000 stadium any day.

Your AD was smart to make them come to you first. Most big schools will agree to a home-home with a small program and then buy the remaining game out after the smaller school visits. While that's not usually a big deal, it can be good for your program to play host to a large school like Miami.

Ease up KB lol. I played my college ball at Appalachian when Mack Brown started them down the road to being a solid program. It's a school that takes great pride in their program and they will play with everything they have to give. Any reasonable fan knows it won't be enough because of the talent and depth disparity but it will not be Western Carolina either. Try not to get your jimmies rustled by a fan that holds out hope for a very unlikely outcome.

Solid program, yeah, of course. I got no beef with them at all. Sincerely wish them well after week one. It's the fans.

Apologies if I went a little off the handle. Probably overcompensated for having to sit idly by with no ammo to throw back at teams like Bama and Florida. In that context, it's hard to take any guff from programs like Appy State and Utah State and the like who also wanna talk a little ish to my team.

You know what JP, I'll listen to the argument that we better be ready for Georgia, Florida and Bama, I got no choice there.

But I'll be damned if I'm gonna hear anything from some far inferior program who's only playing us so they can fund their athletic department. No, it'll be their second and third tier players who couldn't even sniff a damn offer from a school like Tennessee who's gonna need the ice baths come Friday morning. Appy State has no chance to cover a very sizeable, damn near disrespectful spread unless Jones empties the bench mid 3rd quarter. Period.

Get 'em KB lol.

I dunno...I bet we could have some drunk fans play their team and at least hold the lead.

Completely understandable. Between ESPN,Utah State fans and self hating VN posters, preparing us for that defeat, that annihilation was epic! This is a scheduled EXECUTION! We need to embrace it!

I have no problem with the concept and support of "be true to your school." That said supporting your school does not require rtugging Superman's cape. App State has no business pulling the chain of UT or UT's fans. To KB's point, I'm not entertaining a bunch of crap from fans of App State. To go beyond KB's point I'm not taking a lot of crap from UGA either, national champions in 1980, they are not even slightly the program that UT, Bama, LSU, Florida, or Auburn has been since 1980. Like I have to point out to UGA fans when in ATL frequently USC Trojans have given back as many national championships as UGA has won in a lifetime. App State, you beat Michigan when and then relevant as compared to UT?!? Butch please!

No, there's no "likely beat App". We're gonna beat the hell out of you. Good luck the rest of the season, but Tennessee will beat the snot out of Appy State and then whip their ass for having a runny nose on September 1. And it's your little rag tag bunch who will be limping out of Neyland and counting it's wounded after the game....while the Vols begin preparing to play some big boy football the following week in Bristol. The only thing Appy State fans need to be doing is be thankful for the big payday, take their ass whipping like men and stfu.

Damn, KB. All I said was we won't just roll over and play dead in essence. Nice reply

Might as well "play dead"...the real thing's coming. :). Way to get all sensitive and injured on ANOTHER TEAM's message board. :cray:

Well, KB's response was a bit over the top and hyper-sensitive. It's nice to see App St fans with loyalty and the underdog "Rudy" attitude. If we are as confident as we should be, there's no need for overreaction to such loyalty.

Be the Great Dane. Don't get riled up by the smaller dogs.

My HS did that too :)

(Kidding with you guys. One brother graduated from App and the other has lived in Boone for almost 20yrs)

Now that is what I am talking about. I have always respected Tennessee's program. My aunt and uncle live in Kingsport and have been season ticket holders for over 40 years. Tennessee may win by 30 , but I am confident that we cover the spread and maybe gain a little respect of our own during the course of the game.

I am originally from WNC and respect what ASU has done over the years. But unless UT just plays flat, this game will get ugly and early.

You played a weak schedule last year. Only 4 of your 13 opponents had winning records. You went 2-2 vs those teams. Only one was a power 5 team and that game wasn't close.

Against FBS teams with losing records, your O avg'd 41 points but only 24 ppg against those with a winning records. Your D allowed only 16 ppg vs the losing record teams but 31 ppg against the winning record teams.

We can go deeper into the season stats.... but most of the teams you played were just flat bad teams.

I've watched some of your games including Clemson. They played vanilla and flat.... and beat you by 31.

Against UT, your starters will be overmatched at every position at least two deep. UT may play flat for some reason. But that's frankly your only hope for keeping it close. AND.... I have seen only one game since Jones arrived when UT wasn't mentally prepared to play. They didn't always play well. But only once did they lack "fire".
