I hangout with a dude (a friend if that's what you want to call it) from time to time who always builds up these small teams and tries to convince me that it will be a good game. Utah State, App State, Ark State, Western Ky, etc...

App State beat Ohio last year.....by 2.
South Alabama....by a touchdown.
Lost to Clemson....by 31.
Lost to ARKANSAS STATE by 13.

I say get real to anyone thinking we're going to lose our season opener, at home, to Appalachian State.

App alum here.... I know, I know, it isn't 2007 and you guys aren't Michigan. However, I will say this. We are just now getting up to 85 schollies and are only in year 3 of making the transition to FBS football.
We have a very solid qb in Taylor Lamb (31 td's vs 9 int's last year) and a strong stable of running backs led by Marcus Cox (ran for 1400 yards last season as a jr). What we are really excited about is our stingy defense. Love Coach Jones even if he is a UT alum. Yes, you will likely beat App on September 1. However, you will know that you have played a lunch pail mentality team and may want to spend a little extra time in the whirlpool on Friday.:)

Welcome to VN and I hope you stick around. Lamb is a really good QB, but how's the OL.

Well actually Tn plays the lunch pail team on September 10th being that VT first used that mantra.

You are right they are better than ever. They were 11-2 last year as an FBS school not an FCS school like before. We should win fairly easily but Appy State isn't a push over.

If UT struggles or gets beat it will be a long season.
The game should be over at the beginning of the 3rd or at the very latest early 3rd. They just aren't on the same level.

Our last matchup against a pro-style QB....incase Appy missed it.

We're going to hurt you really bad. Not apologizing in advance.

I think App State is a great team in their tier, and they have a great shot of winning the sun belt. I think there are some bottom barrel SEC teams that App State certainly has a chance of beating. Although, Tennessee has way too much talent for this to be close.

Now, the last time I checked UT was a 22 point favorite. If I remember correctly, we panicked quite a bit after beating bowling green by only 29. And we saw how successful of a season they ended up having. So let's not freak out if it isn't a 40+ blowout. This isn't UT Martin.

I don't want to sound totally disrespectful of APSU but there is no comparison between UT and them that is even remotely based in reality. Lamb is not an P5 level QB and their OL is not near that level either. The ProFootballFocus ranking for their OL is based on their stats against their lessors. When they went up against a talented team like Clemson they gave up 11 TFLs and Lamb threw 3 interceptions. He only threw 6 total against their other 12 opponents. One bright spot for them is they could still run the ball at about a Kentucky level against decent teams but if they get behind - it's all over. Lamb completed 9 of 28 passes against Clemson for a whopping 95 yards. There was no other P5 team on their schedule last year. At best I think this could be like a Worley-led UT at Oklahoma in 2014. I doubt it gets as bad as 2013 UT-Oregon but if it does - pity the remaining fools on our schedule. 2015 UT would have had no problem with APSU - 2016 UT may be charged with murder!! :hi:

Say WHAT?

I've never seen App State and lunch pail mentality used together. It's a hippie haven in the boonies. Hence the name (Boone). There are more trust fund babies than working class.

GO BIG ORANGE!

first off i respect the living hell out of Appy state. Great program, obviously a respectable coach, successful at each step thus far and Boone is a fun place to watch a game. now with that said they wouldnt be able to compete against our #2's in my opinion, we are just that much bigger stronger and faster.... and athletic! i wish app state the best and hope they can run the table after the beat down in k-ville! GBO!!!!

It's always interesting to see what fans of the smaller programs are saying. I've done this with Appy State myself, and to their credit, most of what I've seen have been reasonable fans who of course want to win every game but have some realistic perspective about this one. There are, however, several fans of theirs that don't understand the immense and overwhelming talent gap difference from top to bottom in this game. I expect a well played game by them strategically speaking, but let's be real here.......this will more than likely not be close at the end. Great fans though from what I've seen!
