AP Preseason Poll: Good Guys #24

Not sold on OU. The O-line is a huge question mark. Mateer didn't exactly light the world on fire last year either. He played in a soft league and got handled by the only playoff caliber team they faced. Ended on three straight losses, including to Wyoming.

I think they will be better this year, but if our defense maintains the momentum from last year than they will have a hard time on the road against us.

He did put up big numbers on the 2 best teams he played, Boise and Syracuse. Combined 57-80 690 yards and 5 TD's and 3 Int's. Wash St was just a Horrible defensive team and were 6th in total offense. His numbers were pretty equivalent to Cam Ward the year before and that Wash St team was 5-7. Last years team was 8-5. Mateer threw more TD's than Ward did. Ward did average more yards, but that was because Wash St only ran for 84 yards a game, while Matteers team ran for 166. Matteers team had a better record and better overall offensive production. I understand the playing in a bad conference, but so did Cam Ward and Josh Allen. If you can play, you can play. And I'm not saying he will light up SEC Defense's, I'm just saying they will be much better offensively this year than last, UNLESS they battle injury problems like last year. No team could win with all the injuries OU had last year

The Cam Ward and Matteers comparison isn't accurate because Cam Ward played in a Pac12 that was loaded against Power 5 teams that bolted later on for Big12 and B1G. Matteers played a Mountain West schedule with some Power 5 teams on it (Washington and Syracuse). The Pac12 of 2023 was also usually strong across the board, even on defense.

The "if" in that statement is monumental.

What if the frog had pockets? Well he would carry a gun to shoot the snake before he was eaten.

That's why I said IF. Hell, if Mertz doesn't get hurt last year we don't beat Fla. Point being, sometimes you need a little luck. Why the hell would a frog carry a gun? 😂😂.. He's too little! 😃😃

I don't disagree with that, but to hear every SEC fan talk the Pac 12 sucked and had no business being a power 5 conference. So, it can't be both ways just to use as an argument. Cam Wards team lost to some really bad teams, even for the powerful Pac 12. Hell, Cam Wards team only played 5 teams with winning records. That pac 12 was top heavy with Oregon and Washington. Outside of that they were trash. You've got to be an old man or a chick. You would argue anything and think you're opinion is the only thing that's right. I'm not gonna do this all day with you. The exact same thing was said about Cam Ward last year before the season started, he was only the Heisman runner up and #1 Draft pick. Not to mention, Mateer was the #2 QB transfer after Carson Beck. And with OU being ranked ahead of us and Meterr being so highly rated, I'd say the majority would agree with me! And the OC that coached Ward and Mateer, just happens to be OU's new OC.

Tsk, tsk. It had to do with the start of fall camp, used to be referred to as two-a-days. Morning, then evening. I showed up with a Roger Daltry styled set of curls rather than my long straight blonde locks the team was used to seeing. Our offensive coordinator dubbed me chuckiepoo. It stuck. That was 45 years ago. Not sure if Chick Graning is still kicking or not. That team rolled to a State title.

Fair enough

Where will the offensive production come from? How does the repurposed OL come together? A lot of big offensive question marks that some of you just think will be magically answered.
But most of the talking heads admit our line should be better. We had a few young guys working their way into the rotation last year and picked up some good new recruits and transfers this year.

I do not put much thought into the abbreviated practice reports and base my opinions on returning players, transfers and recruits. Our RB's and D-Line seem pretty solid. The O-Line has higher grades than last year but nothing proven. Linebackers, safeties and cornerbacks pass the eye test with a couple returning but shouldn't be a weakness with our new guys and additions. I personally think a couple wins will come from our tight ends. I like this group and hope it is one of our strengths. No clue who the QB will be but have faith in the coaches making the right decision. Cerebral abilities can mask physical disabilities between the hash marks and hope one of our signal callers can showcase that on GameDay. If the QB can absorb the playbook and our tight ends step up, 10-2 is possible with the current players. If we cannot open up the playbook and our O-Line folds, I can see 3-6 losses. It's going to be a fun season, as is all of of our seasons while above the ground, and I'm looking forward to supporting our Volunteers no matter what the outcome. Go VOLS!

Gonna have to earn it this year. With the way the schedule sets up, we might be lucky to finish in the top 25. Likely early loss to Ga, which will probably knock us out of the top 25 or right there at it. Likely loss to Bama at their place, and gotta hate that late game in the swamp. Looks like we'll be in and out all session if we can't beat any of the big 3

I think this ranking is about right, TN does not have a proven offensive line, wide receivers and the QB room is below average atm. Probably 8-4 season losing to all the important rivals and Oklahoma. Worst part is losing to Fl in the swamp once again. I hope Heupel can get this offense in gear, paired up with good defense will change the narrative quickly.

Last Year's AP Top 10 Preseason was not way off:

1) GA. 2) OSU. 3) OR. 4) TX. 5) AL. 6) Ole Miss. 7) ND. 8) PennSt. 9) MI. 10) FSU.

Their 11-25 was way off. (We were #15 and finished #9)

We lose on the ROAD. This game is at HOME. Heupel doesn't lose at home. Easy money to go with Tennessee in that one. I think Tennessee will be down a little but not down enough to lose a major home game. Defense and Running game wins this one.

I also don't really see how a Wazzau QB is such a huge upgrade. Using your logic, we have a 5 star, 4 star, and amazing transfer QB as well. We could have the best QB. People are crowning this guy and he hasn't even played in a Power 5 league.
At some point though Heuoel will lose to a team other than Georgia at home and it very well could be Oklahoma this season they are going to be much improved from last season and if they aren’t then Venables is likely gone.

They had us at #15 last year in pre season and finished us at #8.

Those saying Illinois is misplaced may forget they too went 10-3 last year though in the B1G.
"...though in the B1G." Are you forgetting that the last two FBS Champs were from the B1G? It won't surprise me to see OSU make it a threepeat.

Well, we know why MI won. They cheated continuously.

Ohio State is one of the best teams in the country year in and year out.

There are 10 SEC teams in the AP Top 25.
There are 6 B1G teams.

So, yeah, "though in the B1G."

SEC: It just means more.

More isn't always better. The SEC has 10 teams in the pre-season Top 25. Some don't belong there. Will they be there at the end? Probably not. I wonder if the Vols will even be there. Unfortunately, I believe this will be a rough year for us. I will be overjoyed if we win 9 games. We might struggle to be a .500 team. Win or lose, I will still love 'em. GBO.

I believe the SEC had 7 to the B1G's 5 in the final AP poll last year.

It's definitely the B1G and SEC at the head of the football class but the SEC consistently places more teams at the top than the B1G. For sure, we owe a heck of a lot to Nick Saban for pushing the SEC to get better or get crushed.

I've called 9-3. I believe Heupel will find a way to get some ugly wins and he'll earn every penny of his money this season.

I'm not a UT homer but Heupel has made it work with scholly, visit, contact day dings still hanging on us. I have questions about his on field coaching (his play calls, time management, etc) but he has gotten us more wins than I ever expected after Pruitt left us with sanctions.
