I really think that's more of a function of DoubleClick cookies and the like in your browser than actually pinpointing your IP address. You might be able to pinpoint something regionally, but unless your ISP is really small, it's more difficult to do.

Unless the server is doing traceroutes back to the client IP, which is really too costly to do as far as the time it takes to assemble the information, it's pretty hard to isolate this junk from the IP alone.

If anybody else knows of a different way to do it, please enlighten me (seriously).

Well, I always assumed it was my IP because A) I use Firefox on a Mac with Adblock turned on, so I should have a minimal amount of doubleclick garbage hanging around, and B) I go back and forth between here and Knoxville a fair amount and those things always seem to know whether I'm here or there. (Same girls, of course, just down here they're supposedly in Marietta and up there they're in Knoxville.)

Now in both cases those are residential broadband addresses; you'd assume those would be really easy to trace.

Do you check Knoxville area news sites when you're in Knoxville, and vice versa? Are things different when you use a wireless broadband card from a cell provider?

I don't really look at any Knoxville area news sites, at least with any more frequency than I do when I'm here. I don't use a wireless broadband card; it's just DSL here at my house and my folks' Comcast cable when I'm up there. I'm a former IT support guy who's just a stay at home dad now, so it's a pretty basic setup. It freaked me out a little the first time I saw it, but I just figured the easiest explanation was they were basing it on my IP.

I wish I could think of a site that does that kind of thing off the top of my head now, but unfortunately I can't.

They very well could be cross-referencing your IP address at ARIN ... and if your ISP records for your IP block is headquartered in the same city where you are, then I could see your scenario playing out.

I'm in IT as well. If you don't mind me asking, what type of support stuff did you do?

Anybody having trouble getting a feed? I get in to the game selection page and then no matter which game I select, nothing comes on. When I click the help button, I get a new page to pop up that is blank. Thanks for any help.

When that happens, press the play button in the bottom left hand corner. The feed should then start buffering. Repeat the process a couple of times if necessary. I think their servers are running at full capacity today.

I tried that last year, creating a different account from another region. It didn't seem to work however. It appears they do use the ip address with which you can accurately determine the region.

OK, so I did some tests, and this is what I found:

1.) Using my home DSL account, regardless of signon name, I was able to view all games with no blackouts.

2.) Using my Verizon wireless card, with my new signon name, I couldn't view the UNLV-Tech game because of a blackout.

So, they are using the IP to control access to games. However, it's not an exact science, as they have to take their best guess as to where you are based on the ISP you are using. I think it has to do more with where your ISP is headquartered as opposed to anything else (e.g. via an ARIN WHOIS lookup).

I never even get the play button. There is a "boss button" but it doesn't do anything when I click on it.

I guess you'd say I did kind of high-end, on-site corporate PC support -- building images, certifying apps, managing projects like rolling out XP out to the users. I was in a rough place a few years ago when all the outsourcing/downsizing was going on; I was still technically just a glorified desktop support guy, and an expensive one. I got laid off because I cost too much, and suddenly people were wanting to offer me literally half of what I'd been making. It was about that time that the wife turned up pregnant, so we decided that rather than me take a job making a lot less money and still having to pay for daycare, it made sense for me to stay home and bounce Junior on my knee for awhile.

(And believe me, I had NO IDEA what I was signing up for. The boy is two now, and this is a lot harder than any job I've ever had.)

In better news ... my Comcast cable is broadcasting all three games from different regions. Channel 9 (CBS regular def) is showing one game, Channel 809 (CBS high def) is showing another game, and Channel 811 (temporarily assigned by cable co) is showing yet another. Sweet!

For those with Comcast, make sure you take a close look at all your channels - regular and high-def.

Hmm ... try adding sportsline.com to your Trusted Sites in your web browser. Sounds like your web browser has javascript or other things disabled. Also, try temporarily turning off your Norton/McAfee Internet Security software to see if that makes a difference.

I hear you. I've been working from home for years now and enjoy it a great deal. Would you ever consider going back into IT work, if you had flexible hours and could work from home?

Thanks Hot. I disabled Norton, reset my security settings and rebooted. It's working now.

Sure I would, but I worry that I'm going to be really outdated by the time the boy is to the point where that would be an option. I haven't worked in two and a half years now, so every day I sit here playing with blocks and learning the alphabet, I'm getting more obsolete.

Cool. Norton seems to cause more problems than it solves. Make sure to turn it back on after your done with the games, though. :)

I was a stay at home Dad for 6 years. 6 of the most rewarding years I would add. 1 bit of advice....learn all you can about baseball/basketball/football you can. It'll come in handy for the "Coaching years" :)

You just have to do studies on your own. Get some books, setup a test lab network, and go to work.

Understood. I'm in the midst of revamping my company's software for Vista. The wheel of "progress" keeps on turning, no matter how many nails get embedded in the tire.

We should definitely have a drink sometime. When things calm down on my end, I'll send you a PM and we'll try and set something up. Maybe we could go watch a Vols football game at a sports bar or something.

It's definitely rewarding. There are times when it's the best thing that's happened to me and times when it's the worst...and sometimes it's 15 minutes between the two. Watching a little sack of potatoes turn into a little person with a personality of his own is amazing.

You're right. I could. That's how I learned everything to begin with, after all. But somehow I can't bring myself to care about it that much these days. Every minute I get to myself these days is a rare commodity, so when I get one, the last thing I want to do is something that smacks of work...
