Any History Buffs?

Glad to find this thread. More of an east European/Russian/Soviet/Chinese history fan. And while I appreciate the strategy behind policy, I don’t spend much time on military history, tactics, etc. Definitely enjoy cultural influences - literature, philosophy, religion, etc.
And to think, Genghis Khan has his DNA in the majority of Asian peoples and in many Russians!

Burns' next big project is another massive 5 part (10 hour) long documentary on the American Revolution currently slated for release in 2024 or 2025.

With smaller documentaries on the Holocaust this fall and the American Buffalo next spring and Leonardo Da Vinci in 2024.

The 3/5 compromise was never going to be a long term solution, you can argue that the groundwork for the ACW was laid there...and the Hartford Convention. I think had Jackson not won at New Orleans the country may have fractured (relatively) peacefully at that point.
Going off memory, but wasn't that battle going on after the war had technically ended days before?

I didn't think it was the majority. I was thinking a few years ago they found it to be around 1-2%. Still, that is a lot of people though.

I learned about the "War of the Heavenly Horses" today. a brief war between the Chinese Han dynasty and the post-Alexander Greek state of Bactria.

the Han emperor wanted horses from Bactria, after some initial trading it stopped. The chinese invaded, but the first round failed, depending on your source either from logistic issues, or just not being prepared for the type of fighting. the second invasion worked, and the Chinese got the horses they wanted.

its not very clear for how long Bactria was, if it ever was, under control of the Han, but it was probably short lived just due to the distances. and its seen as one of the reasons for eventual fall of Bactria

The Soviets 5 year plan, and WW2 manufacturing were due largely in part to the US. not just because we supplied them raw materials. They hired a US architect who had designed a lot of Ford's factories to design their first modern factories. worked with them to soviet-tize the designs basically allowing them to copy US factories.

this article doesn't really go into it, but its theorized that the only factories stalin was able to relocate were the American designs, because the first one had been made in the US and shipped, so it was designed to move. impossible to prove one way or the other because of the war itself, but the "new" factories they built in the war were the american designs, so its at least plausible.
