Interesting Commentary from Brent Hubbs..........

I didn't hear this firsthand, so don't shoot the messenger.

Compliments of knoxxvol:

Brent Hubbs Yesterday on Sports Talk was asked why are recruiting this year sucks. The caller pointed out that Bama has as many primo commitments IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE as the Vols.

Hubbs said the number one reason for the poor recruiting is the perception that Phil Fulmer has been here too long, is now the wrong man for the job, and should be replaced. He didn't say he necessarily agreed with it (or necessarily disagreed with it), but that the perception was out there among many fans.

He said there is also a perception shared by many that Tennessee is the most under-achieving program in the nation.

He said internet message boards might contribute very slightly to the perception, but their effect is pretty much a wash since nearly every coach of every school has vocal internet critics.

He said an ESPN piece about Fulmer's under-achieving was being used by rival recruiters. I didn't see it, but evidently it hammered him pretty hard...and was absolutely accurate. Prospects who didn't see it are sent DVD's or videos. It's probably on YouTube.

Bottom line...the number one reason this perception exists is the performance on the field. Although our national TV and regional TV has declined dramatically, we still stink it up enough in big games to assure that most people will see and know what's going on.

If we put up W's next year, the country will notice. We have some new blood who are supposed to be awesome recruiters. I think we are just having a down year, and we should land some highly touted guys on signing day or maybe a little before. I think we end the 2008 recruiting class in the top 25.

This guy just recruited the number 2 class in the country. The reason(I think) its down is because the team is so young. Alabama can bring guys in and tell them they can start from day 1 and tennessee cant do that right now. We are just young and these guys want to come in right away and play they dont want to sit on the bench. Everybodys depth chart for next year has no freshman coming in like it did last year. I expect recruiting to be back to its top 10 level next year, or atlest i hope ifs its not back next year then its time to panic

I haven't given up on this years class, alot can and will still happen between now and signing day and I suspect that we will be just fine in the end.

That being said I am also positive that this class is 2 interceptions in the SEC championship game away from being entirely more promising than it is.

then explain UF & USC and if you dont think that 2 down years out of the last four are going to hurt down the road then you're deceived.

if you read the entire post that summary is not completely true, thats a 3rd hand account of the actual interview, there is another poster who heard the entire thing who debunked alot of that

Bear in mind that the most important "need" in this year's class was DT. The side of the staff that saw no change whatsoever (defense) could not get off their lazy butts and land a single decent DT prospect. I can give a little creedence to those who claim that staff turnover affected the latter part of recruiting on the offensive side of the ball, but there is no excuse in the world for the defensive staff's lack of performance. Maybe Phil will tell us that kids lied ot his face again? I still can't beleive that he admitted to being outfoxed by 18 year-old kids.

give me kevin steele and his recruiting ablity any day over fat a** john chavis and his lazy boy approach to recruiting...maybe this year fulmer will realize thats it's work doing recruiting for the defensive side of the ball with very little help

The perception is definitely out there. When you have a coach thats been here as long as phil and your program seems stagnant then this is happens. I tell you the oc position has gotten all the press so far this offseason. But defense wins championships and i don't see us addressing that enough. If we really were going after steele and money got in the way then shame on phil and shame on hammy for letting that happen.

I have a hard time believing Brent Hubbs would talk that negatively about UT and Fulmer on the radio.

Me too. He has always took the high road when it came to that. It sounds about right though. If you want proof look at our recruiting board. Something is going on.

i didn't hear the interiew but I have noticed that Hyams at least tends to be more critical while doing Nashville radio spots than the general tone of his website. There is a longstanding story that any Knoxville media person who is overly critical will get blackballed by UTAD. I have no idea if that is true, but I definitely think that some guys are less hessitant to take the gloves off the further they get from K-town.

your pointsa regarding our current needs and Chavis's lack of recruiting are spot on. Can you tell me how we dont manage to land a single DT? Can anyone explain that? Our biggest area of desperate need and we cant manage a single commit? Somebody on that side of the ball has to go, period.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings if they all went.

I don't think Cut was ever considered our strongest recruiter

oh, i always thought he was.cause if you noticedafter he left. it seemed like the talent went down a little bit and then he came back and we had a good recruitng class.now he is gone and we are having trouble getting recruits

I think Cut was attributed with signing a few guys out of NC over the years. Obviously, his experience with the Mannings attracts the interest of QB prospects. I've often heard that Cutcliffe is good one-on-one with recruits and he shoots straight with people. Some folks like that style of delivery, while others want to have the smoke blown up their skirts. I've read plenty of posts over the years that say Chief pretty much refuses to recruit. I don't know if that is accurate or not, but it's the story I've been seeing for a good while now.
