Interesting Commentary from Brent Hubbs..........
I didn't hear this firsthand, so don't shoot the messenger.
Compliments of knoxxvol:
Brent Hubbs Yesterday on Sports Talk was asked why are recruiting this year sucks. The caller pointed out that Bama has as many primo commitments IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE as the Vols.
Hubbs said the number one reason for the poor recruiting is the perception that Phil Fulmer has been here too long, is now the wrong man for the job, and should be replaced. He didn't say he necessarily agreed with it (or necessarily disagreed with it), but that the perception was out there among many fans.
He said there is also a perception shared by many that Tennessee is the most under-achieving program in the nation.
He said internet message boards might contribute very slightly to the perception, but their effect is pretty much a wash since nearly every coach of every school has vocal internet critics.
He said an ESPN piece about Fulmer's under-achieving was being used by rival recruiters. I didn't see it, but evidently it hammered him pretty hard...and was absolutely accurate. Prospects who didn't see it are sent DVD's or videos. It's probably on YouTube.
Bottom line...the number one reason this perception exists is the performance on the field. Although our national TV and regional TV has declined dramatically, we still stink it up enough in big games to assure that most people will see and know what's going on.
