Ament will improve

He has improved greatly pushing thru contact. Early on he would take a bump and wouldn’t continue to be aggressive thru it. Think it was more of a mindset change after a long talk with Barnes as well as adjusting to physicality.

Barnes mentioned recently that practicing against Evans and someone else in practice has helped Ament a lot with physicality. Barnes and his staff will make you better if you want it. Great to see with Ament.

Sadly, coaches haven't been able to help Carey. He has regressed. I had high hopes early on for him.
Brown has much higher potential. Future SEC star.

Sorry if this is in wrong thread, just reacting to the coaching comment

Carey is no different than he was at Vandy. He’s valuable in a physical game where the other team isn’t that long. He can bang with the best of them but struggles against skilled players with length. He’s basically what they used to call an enforcer in hockey. Have to pick the spots where you can use him and he can help you. Like when the other team might want to get overly physical with Nate. A couple of picks from Carey will cure that quickly.

How about now after an impressive away win at Vanderbilt who were 21-5 before we beat them..
Ament gets mauled without calls all the time, especially when smaller players are guarding him, and that's all the time too. Refs are less likely to call fouls on smaller players being physical guarding bigger players. Nate's such a badass that he hardly ever reacts to it. It's like he knows it's going to happen.

If you think he gets mauled now, just wait til he gets in the NBA. Wherever he plays, nest year, he had better hire a S&C coach for a couple of years.

On paper yes but, in reality no. That was about as ugly of a win as a team will every have. If we don't play much better we can easily lose 2 or 3 of our 4 last games.

Yeah. In reality 1000% yes. We play like yesterday, and we will go 4-0. 3-1 at worst

Why take a negative view on winning at the #19 home court?

We played a good game yesterday. I don’t agree on the ugliness aspect. Hard fought and entertaining. 71% from line and doubled them up on ORBs as well as in the paint where we dominated while down a starting big man. It’s a double digit win had Vandy not made some buzzer junk and had the ball given to them on at least 5 occasions after horrible calls, like Ament blocking a shot, Gillespie getting the airball rebound and starting to run up the court as a whistle blew on Carey away from the play as his shorts were being grabbed. V then scored. That’s a potential 4-5 pt swing on a bad call right in front of the Vandy bench.

In basketball, you must win games all sorts of ways. We played well enough to win not having one of our better games.

No matter how many times you mention how "ugly" it was won't change the fact that it was a huge win.

The bottom line is there is no such thing as an ugly win against a top 20 SEC team on the road especially in the worst gym in the country for shooting. Doesn’t surprise me at all that we shot poorly. Happens at Memorial all the time. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is getting the W no matter how you do it.

I cannot remember watching a player improve during a season in the way that Ament has. His shot has improved. His awareness has improved. His demeanor has improved.

I was talking about this yesterday, oddly enough. Hockey has to have their goons to protect their stars from getting bullied and hurt.

There is still a place for an enforcer in basketball, but they have to be smart at the same time and know how to make their teammates better. Carey has a lot of ground to make up, but I think it can be done. He needs to show up mean against teams like Kentucky and Florida, who play so physical that the refs call differently when they play.

Carey is mainly lacking confidence. If he wasn’t so shaken, he would be averaging about 12 ppg just because he creates space in the paint so naturally. He’s missed a lot of easy shots and it’s all in his head.. Hoping Barnes can convince him of his potential.

Maybe I'm being too negative and, ofc, a conf road game win against Top 20 team is huge. However, I think it's unlikely we can go 3/4 if we play like we did that game (foul trouble, low scoring efficiency and extended droughts)...felt like Vandy let us hang around and should've been up 15+ at half. Vandy, AL and Missouri on the road are all going to be tough.

Anyway, we are peaking at the right time and I do expect Nate to return to form. I love JG's newfound ability to create havoc and turnover opposing teams.

We beat Alabama on the road already

Agreed and he is taking to more of a slasher to the basket role - much more aggressive offensively.
Love it and hope he keeps this approach up!

We get Vandy and Alabama at home...

This honestly surprises me in a week where he shot 12-30 from the field and only had 13 points against Vandy while Darius Acuff put up 49 on Bama, alone, playing all 50 minutes and only 1 TO. Also had 20 against Mizzou with 0 TOs.

Ament had a great game against OU. Just feels like Acuff had the better week and significantly better individual performance. Maybe he won SEC Player of the Week, though. Full disclosure, I haven't looked.
