I will actually agree with you here. Trump's past threats to pull the White House press credentials from the media members who asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders questions that he didn't like, shows a much greater abuse of power and vindictiveness. His daily, whiny complaints about the "fake news" media are more annoying than this.
The other half of that is certain high level government positions will maintain that clearance even in retirement (or in this case removal) due to the nature of their work as well as having to consult on matters they may know.
Once at a certain level clearances are still "active" even though the background investigation might not be current. I'd be surprised if Comey's wasn't still active even though he was fired.
