Let me start this by saying it is a rant. Opinion. Mine. I am a man. I am 33! So I am probably of average age on this board.

I am a Trooper fan. I like the guy. I like the enthusiasm he brings to the fans as well as players. I know that is unpopular with Hat and some others that i respect a LOT but like I said, is just MY opinion. That being said I have a real problem with the state of this program. It is the same problem I see a lot of teams having. I think that when it comes to college football, too often the focus of the game has turned to the individual coaches, and not the storied programs they represent.

I remember not too long ago when it meant something to be a player for the University of _______. Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama, Tennessee, Penn State, Georgia. Now it is more important to play for Stoops, Cutcliff, Myer, Saban, Rodriguez. Players would rather have a coaches name on their resume' than a schools. It is hard to think that money and the potential of making it in the NFL is to blame.

We have seen it for years in college basketball. that is the only reason John Calipari recruits kids to Tiger High. You think they really give two squats about the University?? No they know he is a HUGE stepping stone to the NBA. One and done. Two if they are lucky. They major in "ME"-ology. We are starting to get the same thing in the football ranks.

I have never been a fan of the NFL because to me (opinion) there is no passion. But when you see players calling it in, because they don't want to risk an injury, or in a certain player from Tiger High, do not even play against your in state SEC rival, because your NFL stock could greatly suffer if a "Real" defense shut you down. This is becoming laughable. Schools are hiring headhunters to win. Coaches who could give a rip about the school that pays them. I don't know if I have heard Saban utter the word Alabama more than twice. Much less Roll Tide, Or Crimson Tide. It is always we , us, our team. He probably is not even sure what team he is coaching this week.

But to read where we, WE, My beloved TENNESSEE VOLS, have players talking of Transferring if a position coach leaves is insane. NOT THE COORDINATOR that everyone puts up on a pedestal but a POSITION COACH!! That explains why we could not get the young guys to get up for the big games against Florida, Alabama, and Cal!!! They do not care about this school. They do not care about what that helmet represents. If most of us where given the chance to put on that uniform and run out of the "T" we would sell our soul. These little premadonnas have no clue what it means. The majority of them have been babied and coddled and have no sense of pride. I have stood behind them, have cheered, cried and fought for them. But if this is how they show their pride and appreciation, then :salute:. Adiós. But on your way out you yellow bellied coward, how bout writing a check to VASF for the amount of your scholarship this past year. Because They owe me a refund for your sorry tail. I made contributions to aid in the development of student athletes here to promote the GREAT UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE!!!!! Not The NAME ON THE BACK OF YOUR JERSEY YOU UNGRATEFUL PIECE OF TWO FACED, SWINDLING, BLACK MAILING TRASH. Thats what you have done you have blackmailed us into believing you were one of us. Someone who cared about and took pride in wearing the Orange. Not someone that wore it only because it was the color of the jersey they handed to you!!

I Agree on the Drink... I am 50...Don't you think you have contributed to the problem as a fan of Trooper... We all love the antics but what a lot of us did not see was the dissention that this was causing on the Team and Coaching Staff... Taylor has no loyalty to Tennessee and this under current may be what has ignited this whole state of the program that you refer too... Right now Trooper Taylor has one thing on his mind and that is himself... not Tennessee or the other players it is all about him and it is like dealing with a terrorist.... When and if all is said and done... This whole season will be blamed on this and will be true... It has caused more than we will ever know.. There is mutiny going on and it is because of a lack of control over one coach and his getting to close to the players and the fans loving him but not seeing through him... TT is a crap stirrer and will continue to do it as long as he can get away with it... He is the infection....and a ugly cyst... So you want to know why the program is in the state that it is you need not look to FAR... it is TROOPER TAYLOR... I DO NOT NEED A DRINK I NEED A FIFTH.

BamaVol, it sounds like you long for the days of Bill Battle. We tried this whole give me 22 Tennessee boys who love the Big Orange stuff back in the 1970s and it crippled the program for most of a decade. Until the quality of HS football in this state vastly improves in relation to other states, we simply cannot go back to that formula unless you are willing for the Vols to be non-competitive in the SEC.

I heard Bobby P. calling the hogs one night.
Shoot, everybody knows hogs sleep at night.
What a waste.

No passion in the NFL? That's a pretty blanket statement don't you think?

There's a reason why all the talking heads and players will say, as high praise, "It's a college atmosphere" when describing the gameday experience in a few places like Green Bay and Denver. It's not that there's no passion in the NFL, but in general the whole enterprise is usually a lot more workmanlike than you'll find in Knoxville, Lincoln, Norman, Baton Rouge, Blacksburg, Athens, etc. etc.

Obviously, there is more passion among the fans. But I think the argument being made about passion is really a swipe at the players in the NFL more so than the fans of the NFL. Apparently, there's this commie, idealistic notion in sports that players that are paid and make millions of dollars have less passion and love for the game than a player that does it on scholarship.

That is where the blanket statement is flawed.

That's no more true than the rest of the statements you just tried to dispute.

watch a Seattle Seahawks game and tell me those fans aren't passionate. Even Jets fans are very passionate.

Please. TVA is trying to act like he knows what he's talking about. Don't get in the way.

Obviously the rumors of the RCA Dome pumping in crowd noise are true, because Colts fans aren't passionate at all.

Yeah I mean, when UT is having a losing season the stadium is always filled to capacity for a cold November game. Totally unlike those unpassionate losers in Green Bay.

The Ravens D has obviously played without passion for the past six seasons. The NE game is proof of that. They just folded like a tent. They weren't upset with how they lost that game at all. The fans and players just walked away... Eventually.

That Ronnie Lott guy didn't have any passion, either. I heard he just wasn't willing to endure any pain or play with any kind of injury.

Has anyone noticed how the Dolphins players and fans have just packed it in this season? They are all perfectly comfortable with going 0-16 this season.

Oh wait.

On the plus side, since the NFL is so devoid of passion, a player that TVA proclaims to play with no passion, Erik Ainge, should excel there.

Eric, bless his heart, will never play in the NFL,...no guts no glory, even Peyton takes a sack now and then.

NFL players obviously aren't lacking for "passion and love for the game." Anyone who thinks that most NFL players don't care passionately about what they do is crazy. But there's definitely something "missing" from the NFL if you're primarily a fan of the college game, and I don't even know what the exact word for it is -- maybe "exuberance"? That's not really right either.

NFL players are hardened pros going out there doing a job that they've been doing, in many cases, for a decade or more; college players are still mostly kids running around on the field. When you watch a college game, even at a football-factory school, there's still a sense of watching people "play a game"; when you watch a pro game, there's no question that you're watching hardworking, tough men doing their jobs. By the time you're playing on Sundays, it's not really a game anymore.

(I'm not even trying to say that one is better than the other. They're just different.)

while i tend to agree with you, those north of us would disagree completely. It's more a geographical thing than anything else.

I disagree, I love football...I can watch Carson Newman, UT or the Steelers, heck I think there's some Arena League teams that are fun...you'd like to think that the pros don't get tricked by the formation, never caught out of position, let's face it, the pros are faster, bigger, more seasoned, but....anything can happen and that's what we love about football. Maybe it's just me, but I can watch anything football and be truley into it.
