All but an announcement away from confirmation.

That is your opinion, oh wise one, not mine. You can not be afraid of being fired from a job. Especially in coaching. It goes with the territory. There are really only two types of coaches, those that have been fired and those that are going to be fired.

My opinion on the hire:

Decent hire, will recruit well, concerns me the guy hasn't led a defense since 1999, and I don't get why he's a better option over CLT.

He may turn out to be the same or worse than LT but he had a 2year long interview. DD knows exactly what LT is and that wasn't DC material. Sunseri is a mystery and I am sure DD doesn't know exactly what he is getting but he knows exactly what LT has to offer and that wasn't good enough.

Valid concern. I'm ready for the details of everything, including confirmation that it isn't going to be a Co-DC situation.

I need to get my arse back to the recruiting forum. There are too many experts on here that 'know' why everything is falling apart in our program. Personally I don't care if you like the hire. I don't care what defensive play you ran to stop 3rd and 4 when you coached the kids, which now makes you a defensive expert. Don't care. I don't want to know, 'if you were Dave Hart' who you would hire. Just tell me the background. Give me the scoup. Tell me what Dooley's wife said to your wife while at Zumba. It's Dooley's ass. If this guy is that good of a recruiter, I'll take it. You can scheme all you want, but if you don't have the talent, good luck. If if you don't like the hire and don't like Dooley then that should work in your favor. Both may be leaving at the same time if he can't right the ship. C u in the recruiting forum, things are looking up over there.

We're years away from having the personnel to run an effective 3-4.

Please tell my why we are years away from having the personnel to run the 3-4. You actually need few quality DL's to be 2 deep. We have some very good depth at LB and some of the SS's can come up and play in the OLB position in the 3-4.
All the 3-4 is, in reality, is a true 50, with the DE's dropped off to LB depth. Easy scheme to put in place and run. Been there and done that. Much better than the 3-5-3 or the 4-2, or even in my mind the 4-3.
Overall scheme simplified here for the less informed.

uhhh fired not retired,:loco:

I understand exactly what you meant. Let me explain here, how often do schools fire a coach and then make their OC or DC the head coach? It happens, yes, but very rarely. I guess you believe Dooley is so dumb he would risk his job by hiring "lesser" assistant coaches? That'd be incredibly foolish on his or any one's part, just doesn't make sense.

Wrong you actually need more DT's because the DE's in a 3-4 are basically converted DT's. This is how I understand anyways.

Does hiring a first year DC (would be former position coach) from another school make a lot sense right now? Just hire LT,right? I love Dooley but I am scratching my head on this one. As they say, I guess that's why Dooley gets the big bucks.

Why are people so ignorant. Rhetorical question I guess. If has extensive NFL experience, great recruiter, experience coaching possible best defense in college in who knows how long, very very respected in coaching circles. Oh but Jim Bob in Bucksnor does not understand and thinks it's a bad hire. Please...

I really hate to say it, but the fact is, we just have some idiots who propose to be UT fans. Some of the remarks on these forums plainly show some people have fingers which work without a brain.

He was a candidate for the Panthers head coaching job in 08. He obviously is considered a great coach.

Lol. When I googled Sal Sunseri just now, a picture of Randy Shannon popped up.

When I googled Derek Dooley I got a pic of Chester Goode.Redirect Notice

1. No proof he is a big-time recruiter. He's been at Bama for a year and the Panthers the 6yrs prior to that.

2. Exactly, he's been coaching for 30yrs and not once has anyone else given him the opportunity to be a DC. If he was such an awesome coach wouldn't he had already gotten that opportunity? He has good connections so why hasn't anyone else given this "stud recruiter" a position with more responsibility than coaching the OLB's?

You might be right. Hope your not.

Dont want to get into an X's and O's argument, but if I have a 4 man front, I need 8 quality players to give me depth. In a 3 man front I need 6. They can be a combination of DT's and DE's. It all depends on the style of attack you want. Those front three have to own the LOS and give the LB;s free reign to run to the football. At least that is the way I have ran the thing in the past.

Also, I know he interviewed for the Panthers job. Was he actually considered a legit candidate? I'm being serious, I was wondering if anybody had a link for that.

Uh...no, not in the SEC. You need 8 quality linemen at all times, because you aren't playing three man fronts all the time.

would risk his job by having one of them MORE qualified than him,,see what im saying?

Some guy posted an article on here from 247 about it. I really have no idea. Im almost positive he was a serious candidate at Pitt.

Id say so. He has been at high profile jobs his whole career. No one can say for sure and if they do they are lying, but his resume is awesome.

Good...resume. I wouldn't say awesome.

And then why wasn't he a coordinator anywhere good? I think it's a concern. I'd also like a guy who has been a coordinator in the last ten years.

I know he was a serious candidate at Pitt, because he is a hell of a recruiter. He'll help in that department.
