Alexis Johnson at practice

Disagree.. I think he will play alot by the FL game. This puts Kongbo back to DE hybrid .

I think he is weeks away from even starting to get practice reps. Once they get to game preps (starts this week) there is even less time for coaches to work with him to get him up to speed with system. All that after he starts practice.

He may very well play before end of year but I think at this point it is a long shot..

Well I'll be damned.....that only took 4 months after his charges were essentially dropped and he was cleared. And btw, this was not a shot at Butch, it's a shot at the ridiculously laborious, unnecessarily drawn out and unfair process that both Alexis and Von have now gone through. Ok....I'm done.

He still has one charge that isn't set to drop completely until October. May not see playing game time at all until after that

Glad to see that butch jones let Johnson back on the team. He will have to earn his right back in contention for a DT job just because he has missed so much time. But he will be there by mid season maybe earlier barring injury.

Sounds like he is about 2 months behind, double up and he will be ready by the Ohio game. Anything more than that and he will be back sooner.

You're wrong. We have no depth at DT

No depth? We have plenty of moving parts that can slide inside. There are very few power running teams on our schedule. Atp it would be in AJ's best intetest to RS. We'll see how it works out.

Would you red shirt him?

Dude will definitely play. Chance Hall goes down with surgery today and we're scrambling for a back up. What if, God forbid, One of the starting DTs gets hurt? We'd be screwed. "We don't face run heavy teams". I'm not going to quote the person that said that but I'm sorry we're going to play Bo Scarborough, Sony Michel, Nick Chubb, Keith Ford at A&M, and possibly Fortnette if we get in the title game and Bama doesn't.

Also, why the hell are we worried about his conditioning if everyone is like "well Tuttle should be good by the Florida game". So we're banking on a guy (love Tuttle, don't get it twisted) who spent last October-April/May in a boot? You really think that Johnson, who is on campus, going to a university on an athletic scholarship, is just going to get fat and sit around all day? Absolutely not. Also, there's no rule that a player can't play if he has a misdemeanor on his record. He and Tuttle will debut at the Ohio game bank on it. Let's remember that behind Kmac Vickers Obrien and Tuttle all we have that have had game exp is Picou. Alexis will play ASAP.

Tuttle was an EE in 2015 and played half the season last year.

Alexis Johnson has never participated in a single practice or received a single second of coaching from Stripling

So today he wasn't at practice and wasn't coached by Stripling? He still has more experience than Kongbo, who is our "solution" to lack of DT. Regarding Tuttle, true he had half a season last year. But the fact remains that a 300+ lb guy couldn't bear weight until 2 months ago. I think he'll be in shape for Florida, and I think Johnson will be ready (enough) by Ohio. This is gonna be one of those situations where we're gonna agree to diagree, but when he is contributing in a big way I'll be there like:

He did conditioning work on the sidelines. Didn't participate in the actual DL drills with Stripling.

I would love to be wrong and see him step right in and play to his potential this season....but he has missed all of winter, spring, summer, and now fall camp. He will have to complete the acclimatization period before he can even put pads on, and at that point the coaches will have moved on to preparing for App State and Virginia Tech. No time to work individually with Alexis.

I mean if we had Tuttle at full strength and more than just Picou and Bain as 3rd string, we'd be fine. But like at receiver last year, we were thin and needed players, which is why pwill (who tore his ACL at the end of his high school career, fought that for 6 months, couldn't enroll or practice at UT until August 24th) played last year. Also, I remember last year we were thin at DT too and Strip was really struggling to find guys after Tuttle and then Phillips went down. I think Johnson won't redshirt if for nothing else as insurance. Dude is big and strong and football smart. Wouldn't be smart to take away a rook you might need later in the game.

Tuttle had an extreme injury.

Johnson is just out of shape. Football shape that is. He can play himself into that.

Tuttle is going to redshirt imo.

So Johnson will certainly play then.

This is coming from someone who never played on the defensive line. As a DT how much is there to learn in terms of coverages and alignments? It seems like there wouldn't be a whole lot, but I was always on O so I have no idea...

I'm going to have to apologize if I was being aggressive earlier, since we're all Vol fans here. But I'm currently watching Florida vs UT from last season on ESPN U right now and it's the 4th quarter. I'm a little heated lol

I think Tuttle will be ready by UGA. That's still 40+ days away. I think that may be enough time to get in the 2 deep

What's the Tuttle redshirt talk when all I've heard from coaches is he is right on schedule. Did I miss something?? GO VOLS!!!

Having AJ in shape to take some snaps at DT would be huge. Anyone who doesn't see this is crazy. Even if he could go 10-20 snaps, that would probably keep Kongbo at end, in his comfort zone (barring injury).
