Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

For all her ideology which I vehemently oppose, if you don't respect and admire what AOC has done you better reassess. She is an obscure rep from a small section of NY. Not a lawyer, community activist (as far as I know), not from an established and influential family, not even someone who built a business. Her views are radical even within her own party. She is a true believer who backs up her ideals with action when given an opportunity. And yet, even with all this 'going against her' she soaks up attention from both the left and the right. She is a savvy user of media, branding, and staying true to what she is about.

If you oppose her politically, I recommend you look for people who can emulate her as much as possible. Let's face reality, I don't want Alabama to do well. Don't support them. But I would clone Saban et al in a heartbeat and plop them on the hill.

I remember telling someone really early on in her political career "underestimate her at your own risk."

Although @McDad she actually was an activist before she ran for Congress. She doesn't talk about it much, but when she was waitressing/bartending she got in tight with some Bernie allies/organizations who groomed/backed her for run for Joe Crowley's seat. It was still quite an achievement; I mean Crowley is an establishment Democrat who held that seat for a long time and had a bunch of money behind him.

I thought I saw somewhere that she answered a "casting call" to become a politician.

Yep. That's more or less exactly what she did. Right place (the Bronx), right time (anti-establishment fervor in the country generally, particularly in the Democratic Party). She's also incredibly good at social media because that is the ocean that she swims in being a Millennial. She didn't have to learn how to use it; she just uses it.

And she speaks their language, shallow groupthink.

She runs political circles around Ted Cruz. Not that he is the golden boy of the right, but who is? Which goes back to my previous point...if you oppose her politically you better find someone who can be her for your side. From my seat at the table, I don't see anyone on the right who is doing what she does.
Democrats, if they are smart, will not allow her to be speaker of the house if she remains radical. She will be far more important doing exactly what she is doing against a "entrenched" old school democrat. No doubt she will be given seats on influential committees to work behind the scenes. But they know better to coronate her as the image of the party.

I am truly unfamiliar - why is she perceived as radical?

She doesn't appear highly intelligent but she has passion. So regardless of what a person believes it counts for something unless you defeat her in the arena of ideas which is not hard. She is evasive and sticks to media and forums that are very friendly to her so she doesn't have to ever defend her positions. That is why Majorie Taylor Greene attempted to get to her because AOC can't win an intellectual debate.

My understanding as someone who hasn't ever examined her platform.

Universal health care
Free college tuition
Increased taxes
Increased social services.

Essentially democratic socialism which is radical to many in the country.

AOC is not particularly intelligent, but she would wipe the floor with MTG in a debate.

A big built-in advantage that AOC has is that the social media ecosystem she thrives in is left-leaning to begin with and sympathetic to her rhetoric/ideas. That's something the right will never have. She is just naturally good at the use of social media, as @KB5252 she speaks their language, and she effectively uses the platform she has as a member of the House to spread those ideas.

I agree unequivocally.

The AOC doppleganger on the right will not be afforded the duck to water advantage AOC enjoys. They will have to be a master at communicating through soundbites. And not be seen as a bully by the media which controls the spigot to the supply of water.

Yep. 100% agree. There currently is no AOC on the right, but if there was, they'd have a tough slog of it. Conservative media (Fox, Ben Shapiro, etc.) would love them and give fawning coverage, but the rest of the media's (CNN, MSNBC, CBS/ABC/NBC, the NYT, WaPo, etc.) straight news coverage would be tough, and the opinion pages would eviscerate them.

Media audiences are so siloed today, but I still think coverage like that could influence independents and people that don't have a "go to" source for their news and opinions. I've noticed this anecdotally with AOC; I know people who aren't particularly politically inclined, but they love AOC. They aren't even progressive people, but the love the AOC image.

I'm not talking about arguing through social media. I'm talking about sitting down and explaining how her positions are sound and moves the country and the individual forward. I'm not talking the sound proof keyboard of social media. AOC can't engage in that manner.

I know. AOC would wipe the floor with MTG in such an environment.

Neither one of those people have much going on between the ears, but AOC would be able to present a much better surface-level understanding of the issues than MTG and make her look foolish. Which isn't hard.
