Aguilar eligibility update

Depending on what JA does, the QB room at UT could see a lot of activity next year. But if there was a way to keep JA, GMac, and Faizon, that would be a pretty good lineup to enter the '26 season with. If JA goes and Merk hits the portal, gonna need at least one portal QB just for depth.

If Merk stays it's OBE, but if he goes, why not try to keep a known quantity (JA) as opposed to rolling the dice again?

Glad I don't have to try and figure out that Rubik's Cube.

The NFL is more of a short to mid range game and I believe he would do fine with some NFL coaching. Chicago has a very good backup they signed to an extension who isn't known for a strong arm but is heady and moves the ball down the field with smart throws. I do believe that a fair amount of JA's interceptions this year are due to WR's falling down and the ball bouncing off the hands of the receivers. the draft picks that tend to fail the most are in fact the ones with the strong arms that never adjust their throws or don't see the field well. Say what you will but IMO JA sees the field and goes through his reads good enough to be drafted. Again Bears bacup was not drafted and got a second contract while several QB's drafted in the first three rounds never see a second contract. This is all to say I believe he has the traits to make an NFL team but as always scouts and GM's make mistakes all the time, there is NO fool proof way to know, not for the NFL and damn straight not for a HS player. I like JA as a QB, with a better defense we are definitely a playoff contender but I for one hope he goes to the draft. I am not a fan of what all this is doing to the college game, he's had his time it's time for others to get their shot.
Once again, despite Heupel having gotten Hooker and Milton to the NFL, despite Joey A having done well enough at App State to jump to a major conference, despite his very good season for us as a "last minute" starting QB in the SEC....... the needle hasn't moved on his draft potential.

He's still seen as a 3rd round or UDFA.

He's not being "ignored" when he's putting up SEC leading numbers and after his excellent transition to UT with only a couple of months to learn the playbook and start.

Could they ALL being making a mistake or trying to get him as a "sleeper" in a late round? Sure. Sure. It's more likely that there's just not enough God given talent, as there isn't for 99+% of humanity, for Joey A to play in the NFL as a QB.

You must utilize the NIL money toward on field play, not in support of 4 QB's. This year is a good example. I am guessing that 25% of the NIL money was spent on players who did not make the field or played a partial season. The injury stuff is bad luck but a team can decide how much they can afford to pay players to sit on the bench. A certain percentage of the sit on the bench money will be a total loss if they decide to move on and hit the portal. Madness.

Looking at the Kiffin reported deal, it's clear that there's a ton of money required to develop an elite program.

If you don't have it, you don't have it, and your chances of competing consistently at the highest level is not good.

If we're worried about our NIL all being used for "on the field" and not partially for development of high level prospects, we're not there yet.

The system does not allow for development of future NFL players based on finances. Everyone is in the same boat. The system is designed to pull players from the portal that were developed elsewhere. 4 and 5 star players who want to see the field, smaller D1 schools and, as we see today, D2 schools.

The system is based on lots of money to buy the premier players. Teams that CAN and WILL spend more on elite players and elite coaching have a better chance to win.

This isn't new. Teams like Bama that "magically" stacked players pre-NIL did better. Teams that didn't, didn't.

off topic. if I were an nfl gm, i'd draft arch manning before i drafted diego pavia. that personality ? nope, no sir.
Agree. Pavia is Johnny manziel jr. I believe that he is way toooo short.
NFL teams are to disciplined in their style of play. Haslem may draft him.

The problem is the NFL puts too much emphasis on traits and not nearly enough on game film. This is exactly why Tom Brady fell to the 6th round as well as many others. You would think with as many low or undrafted people making it big in the NFL they would reevaluate their system but everyone thinks they will find the next hidden gem based on traits instead. If you are a player such as JA then this should not concern you, it should put a chip on his shoulder to continue to prove everyone wrong just as he did at UT.

"The problem with the NFL" is quite a rich way to put it. For every Brady from the 6th round there's MANY MANY MANY 6th round QBs you never have heard of.

That's a problem? That sounds like a working strategy to me. Most 6th round guys never go on to be Tom Brady but when one does..... you pronounce the system flawed because it missed one.

Geez.

If Josh is smart He will nurture Merk, as h knows the offense, has been patient, and I think is very coachable. So if Joey goes, focus on Merk. He may be Ty Simpson II. Or an even better Arch Manning, who I don't really think is all he's cracked up to be.

As to the "other guys", see under "Iamaleava"
Another thing...I keep seeing this $2 million number thrown around. Thats not what Joey is getting this year! Thats what Nico allegedly got. Joey is allegedly getting 1.2 M this year. A significant savings.

I hope Joey moves on to pro football. Draft status should not matter. If you get drafted any where in the draft that is all you need. After that it is up to the person to show they belong. I think getting drafted later is better than early for QB. There's more chance you get with a better team than getting drafted by the Browns, Saints, Titans or Raiders.

If he sticks around that # will increase a lot

Every team has a budget and every team feels like it's not enough for the reasons we just discussed. The bar is raised every year as far as how strong you must be to win and can't be compared with the past needs. Soon, they will stop recruiting freshmen that can't see the field immediately and the portal will become the main way to get players with game experience and directly filling a need.

The elite echelon will be defined by money which buys talent just as the NFL is the step up from college.

Smaller schools and conferences that won't spend big money will not be competitive, as we see currently.

This is why the high revenue sports at schools should break away from college, establish a pro league, cap the salaries, and enjoy the big media deals.

Smaller schools AND non revenue sports at large schools should be able to return to a more traditional college experience: less revenue spent on NIL, coaching, facilities, etc and more emphasis on sports as an adjunct to an education for both players and other students at the school.

What's ruining big-time college sports is trying to run a pro league without the controls a pro league needs like salary caps, free agency controls, etc. It's not sustainable.

With the money UT threw at last year and this incoming recruits, Heupel seems to think different. It would make you vomit if you knew how much UT had tied up in this years freshman, the majority of which contributed nothing this year.

They have plenty of money to spend on transfers.
