Academic report from GVX....

Not to mention Dooley recruited these guys.. (well some of them at least)..

If he doesn't feel that keeping his player academically eligible is part of the job - then he should only recruit players who will never come close to being ineligible and don't need that extra motivation.

Got it. Being objective about it, I think it's fair to be upset about the situation without attaching blame to one person. Some staffers didn't do their job well enough, some players aren't taking academics seriously enough and somebody isn't keeping the coach well-briefed. But it was an unusually stressful fall, and while that is no excuse, hopefully it was a wakeup call that will fix the problem going forward. UT is a punchline again, but the situation can be rectified and I doubt it will cost us more than a few players that wouldn't have seen much PT.

But holy crap, don't they offer Weightlifting, Introduction to Communications and Sociology 101 anymore? That's gotta be a 3.0 right there.

Agree totally. Not one person deserves blame here, but when you are the head coach, it's your job to make sure academics are in order and this doesn't happen. Especially when you have the VFL program, supposedly ensuring the kids will be successful outside of football.

And who should be kicking their ass to get motivated?

Name me one coach who can get a player motivated about school. What is the point of giving all the players these extra resources and the university paying all this extra money for it if the coaches have to take time away to do it themselves?

And hopefully that is what happened according to his quotes, but as I said the one's wanting him to fail does not see that part.

I don't think anybody wants him to fail, because 1) I don't want the students to fail. 2) Because it looks bad on the program and more importantly the university.

Come on. You are not this dense.

You take five minutes, get them into the office, read them the riot act, explain the great situation they have, call their parents/guardians, and tell their professors to give them a kick in the ass.

Actually I believe more than a few want Dooley to fail. I think if you are truthful you will agree.

So that guarantees they will study and do well on their tests?

No - you make sure they study and go to class - it doesn't stop at telling them to do those things.

Glad my parents didn't say "Hey, Zack, do your homework."

And then stop there. Because Lord knows I wouldn't have done it.

Not really. If UT went 14-0 and won a national title with Dooley this year, nobody in hell would care if he was the coach or not.

I personally wish he were good enough to succeed here - but I do not believe he is at all... so I would rather him fall flat on his face (I don't necessarily want him to since that means having to endure another year up 6 wins or less) rather than him getting 1-2 more years of mediocrity and still end up getting fired..

I would get the actual man for this job in here sooner rather than later.. but I suppose Dooley could still grow as a HC and surprise me.. just not betting on it.

The VFL program was formed for one and only one reason. That reason has nothing to do with ensuring success anywhere but on the recruiting trail. The VFL program was made to make mommas think their sons would be taken care of off the field. It was brilliant marketing but issues such as this one proves my point on the purpose it was created.

If your 18 and you still need your parents to tell you what to do then something is wrong.

No, but these kids, for some of them, are away from home, with the temptation of girls, partying, drinking, drugs, etc., along with playing football. Yes, they have great resources at their disposal. However, just like a lot of teenagers in school, sometimes you need a kick in the ass. It's obvious the team needs that. Dooley is the coach. He is their "advisor" so to speak. It is his job to do that, especially with his emphasis on the VFL program.

I agree. It's a ploy.

But that's not how Dooley is making it to be, and it still looks bad.

Kick off or suspend his best players in arguably the biggest year of Dooley's career?

He's the one who believes life after football is more important for these kids, no? VFL program and all that jazz?

He won't. But that's how it should be done. Not blaming him for it, because we the fans created the culture of college athletics, but that's how it should be.

At the same time, it ultimately comes down to the players. Just like the whole effort on the field issue. I know tons of guys who had a coach in his a** 24/7 but that didn't change anything. It ultimately comes down to the players to. Maybe Dooley could have done a better job at making sure things are organized and players are showing up, but it comes down to the players to try.
